Ok one of rigs harddrive failed, which dropped my ppd by 400 points (usually around 800ppd). But I have 6 other rigs folding 24/7 not including that one.

The rig I lost had a 2.4ghz intel cpu(bigpackets w/advmethods) and the others I have folding have a 2.6ghz intel cpu(bigpackets w/advmethods), 3x1ghz intel cpus, a 1.4ghz intel cpu, and a 2ghz AMD cpu(bigpackets).

So why did my production get cut in half when there are more powerful cpus folding???

I also just re-read some of the FAH stickies and relized it said only use bigpackets if you have more then a gig of ram... i thought it was 512mb is that why some of my rigs arn't producing so many points?

Or is that a reasonable amount for the power of the cpus folding?

You should be getting more than 400ppd with your remaining rigs although it is a fact that 1 fast machine will outperform several slow machines. the 2.6 should be set to qmd's. I dont know much about amd. your 1.4ghz cpu should be set with -advmethods. I have a 1.3 set with advmethods and bigpackets and i get a steady diet of 600 pointers. It is really only necessary to have a gig of ram if you are folding qmd's on a rig that you do other things on. Folding only boxes, or non qmd rigs will be ok with 512. I fold qmds on my work computer and it has only 512mb ram. I only get serious lag pre convergence on qmd's.

if you held a gun to my head and MADE me guess what PPD those would get...

2.4ghz intel 330-400
2.6ghz intel 360-420
3x1ghz intel 20-50 (x3)
1.4ghz intel 40-70
2.0ghz AMD 100-275

but just like OCing, YMMV!!
(mobo chipset and memory settings are probably the most major factors)

one thing bugs me, i think out of the 15 or so rigs that could get 600 pointers, ive only seen maybe 5x total over my 2 years of FOLDing...i must just be unlucky when it comes to them...

now for amd's, -advmethods is a bad thing for PPD. you get a lot of small beta gromacs that aren't worth much. if ya have at least 256mbs of RAM on an AMD, set it for normal (no -advmethods) and BP=yes. If it's a p4, do the same unless it has over 512mbs of RAM and ya want a QMD folder, in which case add the -advmethods flag.

Right now, -advmethods only helps out P4's, and the RARE amd that gets one of the new mega-point Gromacs (like the 1k+ pointer)

Here's my take on what your production should be:
Folding QMDs assuming dual channel operation (advmethods/big/>504MB ramavailable):
p4 2.4 = 336 ppd
p4 2.6 = 364 ppd
Folding average mix of WUs currently available:
p3 1.0 = 45 x 3 = 135ppd
p3 1.4 = 70 ppd
xp 2.0 = 140 ppd
Total for all 1045
If you use the your rigs a lot, you'll get less. If you land a bunch of bonus WUs on your lesser rigs you'll get more.

Just for jollies I sneakernetted a QMD to sig rig #3 which I use at the office. Preconvergence it is quite laggy.

Ahhh, thanks for the tip TF! Been usin' "-advmethods" flag on all my AMD's figuring I'd get high pointage wu's, but got a loooong series of small point units on them, lol.

Hmmm, haven't looked at EMIII for a couple days, but checking now, I see I did get a 604 pointer on my A64 lappy this morning, and a 686 pointer for one of my T-breds yesterday with the advmethods flag set. Hopefully things are changing.

man your lucky

my parents shut down my main rig(p4 530@3.15ghz)that was capable of 500ppd(i had to losen up the timeings even at stock)

that was like 80% of my ppd

Dang, that bites. I'm assuming that your parents shut it down because of the power bill, correct?

My dad is really paraniod like that too. When i visit, he totally freaks out if he thinks i am downloading anything. He thinks that just about everything is a virus. I know it sucks.

were getting way off topic, but i just have to tell ya this one:

so im over the wife's friend's house working on the PC we gave her daughter for Christmas...
the mom almost starts freaking out saying, "OMG did you know (shes TELLING me) that you CAN get a virus just by turning the computer on!!!!"
(this PC isnt part of a network or even have a line into the modem  )

:bang head

needless to say, the thing aint FOLDing.

what we think but cant say (http://www.greece.k12.ny.us/taylor/humor/sixthsense.htm)

Yes off topic....

Had that same problem. While I was home I was folding with the family computer. Getting a steady ~210 ppd on QMDs. But they thought it was something bad and at least they admit that they just don't want to deal with what they don't understand. (Admitting to computer incompetence(SP?)) Plus it was on dial-up only line so they didn't want to hassle with phone lines and internet connections and monitoring the thing. :(

Anywho... back on subject...

Have you changes your settings? Seeing any improvement yet?

well getting back on topic... its appears that the info you guys told me gave me a 300-400ppd boost .

Thx for the help guys :)
