Hi,
I recently installed a new HDD in my pc and that went fine (i think) then tried to free up some space on the small "C" drive partition (6gb - windows files only) then I compressed it, i have done this before and also on my laptop, so why the error??? it has never happened before and i can't even get into safe mode. The error comes up just after POST.
Any ideas???

Handling the "NTLDR is compressed" error:
http://bootmaster.filerecovery.biz/appnote6.html

Additional Info:
Windows XP Professional might be unable to find Ntldr in these circumstances:

If Ntldr is moved, renamed, or deleted.
If Ntldr is corrupted.
If the boot sector is corrupted.

Under the preceding circumstances, the computer might not respond to input or might display one of the following messages:

A disk read error occurred.
NTLDR is missing.
NTLDR is compressed.

You shouldn't need to compress the drive of that size for the OS only. I have a 5gb partition and only using 50% or so. Besides that, compressing, is only going to hamper performance.

tahnks but doing those does not work, it says BOOTMGR not NTLDR
thanks all the same though

Doing what doesn't work? Did you try changing the attributes of NTLDR from the Recovery Console like the article suggested?...

CD \
ATTRIB -C NTLDR

...or did you not even try, because the error message mentions BOOTMGR instead of NTLDR?

I couldn't agree more.
