***Instructions***
1. Sign up under the "Crazy Domain Insane." Be sure that you are using the "Yearly Pre-Payment Plan."
2. Follow the instructions until you reach the (5th step) Verify Total page.
3. There should be a little inputbox above a number (it should be a little bit over $110)
4. In the inputbox, type in 777
5. Click the submit button next to it, and voila! The total comes out to $9.24!
Yes that's right, $9.24 a year for FULL HOSTING. Dreamhost is amazing. I haven't experienced one downtime with them, yet.
Have fun hosting all your files! Think of it as buying a 20gb hard drive that can be accessed by anyone with an internet connection XD

How are the speeds ?
Speeds are awesome, I get full bandwidth downloads on cable modem. I also host a forum on my $10/year hosting (from last year's promotion) and on a few occassions the sqldb server went down but came right back up. Overall I rate them as excellent hosts, and I've had my fair share of lousy hosts (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=420564)...

You think i could still run a server on it for pure http anime episode downloads?

Hey wait, what happens after a year when I have to start paying?
What about the domain name registration, free as long as you are a customer with them, but what happens if you find a different host and want to transfer it?

Well, my $9.24 a year hosting is about to finish in about a month. I believe after it it goes back to the regular price, but they have this option in the payments thing that you can set... it makes it so anything higher than the amount in it, they won't charge your card.
For example.
I put in $10.00 US for it. Now they can't charge my card for any waiting payments that are over the $10. So if it goes back to being the $110 (which is still a pretty awesome deal, even if it isn't uber), they wouldn't charge my card a penny.
But I'll confirm it with a month.
This would be an awesome image host (I also use it to host my hiking pictures page (http://www.the-boogiemen.com/hiking/)).
I've already cancelled an account with them started under the promotion last year. There's no strings attached. They offer domain transfers, so they don't hold your domain hostage or anything. This appears to be a really good, legit company.
OC/ingmaddog, no resolution yet. The attorney general sent me a letter back saying they're awaiting response from the company.

thx i grabbed this deal and setup for under $9.50 for a full year :D
Excellent! I was signed up within 60 seconds of reading this thread.
I usually catch these sorts of things right after they expire! I paid my current host more to up my monthly bandwidth to 2GB. I feel like an idiot. Oh well. Thank you for sharing and posting this awesome deal with the rest of the community. Hopefully in one years time a 888 promo code will work.
Holy crap, lemme get this right. $9.99 for one year of 1tb bandwidth, 20gb space and more? If so, death to Surpass!
Edit: This is BS, how is that possible? I'm not complaining but dammmn! I'm paying 15 a month for 100gb bandwidth/10gb space but this is like...wow.
Edit 2: This is just un-friggin believable...i could only dream of having that much bandwidth. Now i can finally host the files i want without worry of losing all that bandwidth!

If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
Word on ye olde interwebs has it that Dreamhost limits your CPU usage to 2400 seconds a day. Not sure if this is true or not as it seems that most reports of this were perpetrated by one person flooding the same message on a bunch of forums and there aren't too many other reports. On the assumption that Dreamhost limits your usage as stated above, the math isn't pretty.
1tb of bandwidth per month equals out to either 1000 or 1024 gigs.
That equals a per day usage of 33.33gb or 34.1gb at 30 days per month.
Divide that number by 2400, and you end up with 13.8mb or 14.2mb.
What does that mean?
Well, to fully use up your bandwidth and still comply with the supposed 2400 seconds of CPU usage per day, you would have to transfer about 14mb per second of CPU usage.
For a minimal 50k webpage, that is 280 connections per second, or 0.0036 seconds per connection.
Good luck using even a tenth of that bandwidth and still complying with your average blog/website. You could probably slip by with around a twentieth or a thirtieth, but don't expect to see anywhere near the bandwidth they claim whilst still complying to their TOS.
It is still a good deal, yearly hosting for less than $10 is pretty damn good, but the only reason they list that much bandwidth is probably because they know it is just about impossible to use it all up...
Wow...you completely just confused me. So basicly your saying, they only allow 2,400 seconds of connection to your server a day or...err...I'm not understanding. Basicly the only reason I'm so excited is because of the ammount of bandwidth there is. I got a file that is a few megs short of a gig and alot of people will wind up downloading it. Along with hosting my personal site, a small fan site that probaly wont have much traffic (basic html) and ipb.

Straight from the horse's mouth:
https://panel.dreamhost.com/kbase/index.cgi?area=3079&keyword=bandwidth
So if I had a file that I hosted, and would take 3 hours to download, then the person downloading would have to do it piece by piece for a few days, or does it just stop downloading after the 2400 seconds in that given day?

Believe it or not I used almost 300gb of bandwidth in 15 days of billing cycle..and I didn't realize until I got charged about $100 (1gb per dollar over, they used to have 150gb of bandwidth). I started the throttling or else I believe I could use up about 600gb or so :P

Heh, I believe you. I had a similar situation on my old digital-art portfolio site: had a number of pictures and videos on the site, started getting more and more unique hits per day, people kept downloading and streaming everything, and within the second month the hosting company told me to either pay $99.99 minimum for a dedicated server or GTFO. I chose to GTFO.
And no, they won't stop all traffic after 40 minutes of CPU usage. They will email you and tell you to do something about it, and if it goes on for a month, they will shut you down. Mind you, they have a 97 day money back guarantee, so I would guess they will suck it up and take it until that point, and then give you a one month warning.
So, one could in theory think of it as 127 days of virtually unmetered bandwidth if one was so inclined. If you were able to time their deals just right, you might be able to get "unmetered" hosting year round for $30-$40...

my account is fully setup and working :D ill show you my website as soon as its done...
i still havent used my 1 domain yet, so im testing a subdomain :D
I have 2 small, static sites and one smaller sized forum running off the same dreamhost account and haven't encountered any bandwidth/cpu usage issues in nearly a year. FYI. A larger forum might but then again a larger forum could afford a dedicated server.
I wish I knew what I was doing when it came to this kinda stuff... I know the basics of basics when it comes to websites.
I only know how to use Microsoft FrontPage, and I've been told it's a newb program... I guess that confirms my newb status with web pages.
Dreamweaver + raw code = Win.
man that's cheap...thanks. I'm signed up for $9.24 per year...awesome.

heh, im going out the easy way...
phpmyadmin + mysql + e107
I only know how to use Microsoft FrontPage, and I've been told it's a newb program... I guess that confirms my newb status with web pages.
I use frontpage out of sheer convenience, though I know basic html and sometimes jump into the code if Frontpage doesn't quite get it right...
But essentially you could copy your frontpage files to the server and point a domain to the host by following their instructions.
Here's the skinny:
1 - Have money, debit or credit.
2 - Signup for Dreamhost. Save the emails they send you!
3 - Register a URL/domain name. Once that's registered, follow the instructions in the dreamhost email to point the domain to dreamhost's servers. Search Google for keywords "domain registration" and pick something in the $5-10 range.
4 - Go into your dreamhost account (https://panel.dreamhost.com/). Click Domains on the left, then Manage Domains. Click Add New Domain / Sub-Domain at the bottom. Unless needed, you probably won't need to do anything other than add the url/domain name on the first line.
5 - Get a ftp client like WS_ftp. Setup the ftp client using the information provided by dreamhost in the email (they'll also include a startup password, which I just keep since it's pretty secure). Be sure to save the password in the FTP program so you don't have to keep looking it up. Frontpage comes with a web publisher I believe, maybe that would work as well as FTP.
6 - Connect to your site using the FTP program, upload your files to the domain/url folder you'll see once connected. Be sure some type of index(.php .htm .html, etc) file is in the directory. Unless you set dreamhost specifically to look elsewhere, it's going to pull web content automatically from the domain/url folder you'll see when ftp'ing. In order for a web browser to display content to a visitor, you need some type of homepage file (typically called index.htm, etc) in the root web folder.
Rinse, repeat. :D

3 - Register a URL/domain name. Once that's registered, follow the instructions in the dreamhost email to point the domain to dreamhost's servers. Search Google for keywords "domain registration" and pick something in the $5-10 range.
Yahoo offers $3.00/yr domain name registration. Although transferring your domain from yahoo to someone else is purportedly a time consuming and potentially irritating process. Still, keeping your hosting and your domain registration separate have big benefits, although two unresponsive providers just means twice the trouble...
Well.
I dropped Surpass as my webhost and went with Dreamhost. I can only say that I am impressed so far. Very fast with getting your account up; they set mine up and enabled everything within 5 minutes. Panel is very new to me for I am used to cPanel but its very detailed and exaclty what I look for. Its a bit slow but thats due to the security involved. Transfer speed is very, very nice, maxes out my 8mbps connection. As well as my domain updating to their DNS within 5 hours, thats very nice. With Surpass it took close to 72 hours.

Yeah, set up and DNS update was very fast! I have already moved a few of my site on to the hosting and all is going well.
Their FTP is pretty damn fast as well...and responsive :D
Bump, these folks deserve it.
Anybody know if this deal is still going on?? I would like to put up a site to host a few files and learn WAP/WML but I don't want to pay a lot of money. 9.99 would be awesome!

I haven't seen anything about a 2400 cpu second limit anywhere except here... Considering most of what you're doing isn't all that mathematically intensive (at least most webhosting apps aren't), it might be hard to hit that 2400 second limit. This is because it's not 2400 seconds in real time, but the number of processor cycles that the processor is capable of in 2400 seconds. I believe in C++ the processor cycles per second is defined in ctime as CYCLES_PER_SECOND ... anyways, 2400 seconds can be quite a long time. I've managed not to use 5 minutes of cpu time while running programs for over 30 minutes at my University...

still works you have to enter at the bottom of the signup pag under promotion code/who refered you. not under gift certificate on the billing page.
Its cheaper than the 21 i pay quarterly. and i already have 3 domain names 2 hosting sites and now a 3rd free domain ill choose later. ;-)
hey, whatever the truth about this host is, PLEASE post it (edit it) in the main (the innitial) thread!

I wish I knew what I was doing when it came to this kinda stuff... I know the basics of basics when it comes to websites.
WordPress.org is a nifty blogging/site tool which Dreamhost will automatically install for you if you so desire. I can edit basic HTML and whatnot, but I never dreamed of a setup like my site (http://www.redredballoon.com) (hosted by Dreamhost on another of their $10/year deals). It handles all the code and gets you started, and I've managed to begin small edits to PHP now that I've been surrounded by it for a little while. If something breaks I'd have a hard time fixing it, but for the most part Dreamhost + WordPress = Win too! There's a really helpful community out there as well, and you'd probably get answers as fast as you can come up with questions.
To the topic, I haven't had any problems with any 2400/throttling/hidden evil or anything else. Signed up late Jan., I think, and it's been smooth sailing so far.

I love it - your disk space/transfer allotment increases weekly and you get tons of it. It's real easy to use, their panel is very, very nice. They take the hard part out of what most people want to do: blogging, calendars, online stores, web portals, setting up DB's... all in their panel.
The only complaint I have is the slow response when I try to retrieve email - once it gets going its fine but it always takes a while to connect and get going.

Happened to catch this thread and just thought I'd post a concern that MAY be an issue for some folks- note that I am NOT using this webhost and I gave a quick look-see but saw nothing on this in the feature list.
Backup restoration.
Someone I know online recently screwed up a small writer's forum they were running when they tried to upgrade their forum software version.
Things got so badly hosed that the only recourse was to have a full restore done by the host: site and mysql database.
There was a $150 charge for this service.
Now I do have one simple website of my own that is hosted by Interland, and I have nothing fancy on it- but backup restores do NOT cost anything.
I have done some support for other sites that were hosted by Interland and did have dbs and some fairly fancy stuff- and did need to have backups restored: there was no charge.
A thing to check when looking at potential webhosts, folks- especially if you plan on forums or otherwise relatively critical data: is there a charge for restoring a backup?
The quick look I took at this place did not show anything, so they may be fine.
Just a heads up. :)

www.a1strank.com and www.dj-a1.com are both mine from same host :)
Backup restoration.
The last Dreamhost newsletter stated they had just made available the back-up feature for any database a user had set up. Only detail is the user has to initiate the backup. I'm not sure of their charges outside of that.

Here's the scoop one the 2400 seconds limit.
http://www.wiki.dreamhost.com/index.php/CPU_Minutes_FAQ
The BBB has given Dreamhost an "F" (for what that is worth anyway)
http://www.labbb.org/BBBWeb/Forms/Business/CompanyReportPage_Expository.aspx?CompanyID=131312 94
They give 97$ to anyone who referrs a new customer, every time. You can make a lot of money referring ppl this way.
I know ppl that have had a great time with Dreamhost and others who were taken royally. I think if you are hosting static pages and doing just downloads you will be fine, but for database and heavy scripting, the CPU limit might get you.
Do a search on dreamhost problems and you'll get a good idea of what you are getting into.
I'm not for or against Dreamhost -- Never used them -- nor would I ever for that matter. I depend to heavily on my websites and my clients websites.
If you want to give them a shot I say go ahead, you can always move it to a different host if things go south. Plenty of hosts to pick from.
