View Full Version : Would it be worth it?

OK here's the deal.

I love my system but I feel like the one thing that could be better is the RAM situation.

I am currently running 4x512 mixmatched pairs at 333mhz, 2T mode, 2.5 CAS with 2-3-3-5 timings, keep in mind this is 400mhz ram.

Would I really see a noticable performance gain if I sold the current RAM setup and bought a match pair of 2x1024 and shoot for 1T mode, 2 CAS at around 3-4-4-8??

Would I even have a chance of getting the new RAM to run at those numbers?

How would you run CAS 2 at 3-4-4-8? Makes no sense. Otherwise yeah you'd see a difference since you'd be running at DDR400 instead of DDR333.

Yeah, im a little confused how you are running CAS 2 with 2-3-3-5 timings. With 2x1GB sticks, there would be a difference.

My bad guys.

Pretty new to the RAM timing and all of that.

It would be 2.5-3-3-5

Sorry.

Now back to the question.

Would I notice a difference in games if I ditched my current ram setup and went with a matched pair that would give me similar timings that I'm running now but at 400mhz instead of my current 333mhz?

You'd notice a big change in synthetic benchmarks, but probably not a whole lot of improvement in real world performance.

There are several reviews/comparisons written up about this topic - google around and see if you can find something that compares real world performance with changes in RAM speed.

Noticable performance in gaming? Yes.
3448 at what speed?

If what you have now is DDR400, why aren't you running them at DDR400?

3-4-4-8 at 400mhz.

If what you have now is DDR400, why aren't you running them at DDR400?

Cause when I overclock to 2.5ghz instead of stock 2.0ghz I have to set my divider to 2/1.66 which puts me at 333mhz.

Now that I'm learning more about this, I was thinking I should try running at 3CAS 5-5-10 or something like that and maybe I could get it to run at 400mhz with my overclock.

I figure more memory bandwidth is better then timings.

I'm not 100% sure you'll feel the difference, but it should definately help give your system a kick in the pants. Mis matched sticks with various timings and stuff simply means you're losing performance somewhere...get a matched set of gig sticks and sell off what you have, and pay the difference for some solid sticks @ 1T. The hot ticket right now for overclocking are the UCCC sticks like the G.Skill 2GB set for $200 that does DDR500 3-4-4-8, and I'm pretty sure they can do 3-4-3-8 @ DDR500. Not bad for $100 a stick. ;) Also, there are plenty of lower-timing sticks as well that would work well on a divider.

Cool, thanks for the help.

One more question:

I've been looking at the G.skills RAM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231021
or spending a bit more ($25 to be exact) and going with the new OCZ stuff.

What do you guys think?
