View Full Version : Why don't more MMORPGs release classic servers after large updates?

The game that comes to mind is Star Wars Galaxies... Go to their forum and every 3rd post in the general discussion is someone trying to get a classic server, or complaining about the new stuff v. the old. DAoC pulled off their classic servers with HUGE success. If I remember correctly their entire user-base jumped drastically and they expanded to several classic servers from their original one.

Expanding more than one code-base is a poor excuse for not running a classic server. It wouldn't be any more difficult to maintain a static server without bunches of stupid updates than it would to maintain a new server, plus a test server. Really what are stopping more MMORPGs from bringing back what their veteran players remember as the "good old days"?

BTW, SWG isn't the only game that would benefit from a classic server. Ultima Online has tons of people that reminisce about the game's early ideas and play style. As well as many other long term MMORPGs.

Because they don't want to and your still paying them.

I would have to say for upkeep reasons.

Why? well 2 reasons really;

1- They can't market expansion packs to a classic server community. :shrug:
2- Can only speak of SWG here IMHO their would be 70% playing the classic server. :clap:

And no "Fighter2a" we don't pay them any more at least I don't. I canceled both of my accounts and took all the stuff I had with me out of the game to make it that much better :eek: as all of us Real (Pre-Combat upgrade) Jedi did.

If EA would start a Pre-Reinasance UO server I would play again for sure LOL
