I had a 7800gtx for a few days. I wasn't too impressed with the performance or overclocking abilities. I returned it and bought an x800xl. And, I got a ton of cash back. :p

Btw, this card was bought at Bestbuy. I believe this is the bfg brand. x800xl. I haven't heard about this too much on the boards. I ran a few searches and couldn't find out too much on these, especially the overclocking abilities. Out of the box this card ran 52xx on 3dmark05 on the latest omega drivers. What is the general cenus of the overclocking abilities of this card? Anything I should be aware of as far as stock cooling goes? What makes the Xl different from Xt and pro? Specifically pro?

As far as OCing goes... (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=423297)

XL should have more pipes than the pro, but lower clocks than the XT @ stock. (somebody may correct me on this)

Best OC ati card is the Saphire X800GTO2. It has the R480 chip in the X850XT PE.

The X800 XL and X800 XT both have 16 pipes. The XT uses the R420 chip and the XL uses the R430 chip. Both are terible overclockers. Clock setting is pretty much the default. You have be able to overclock it a bit more but not much more.

I don't know about terrible overclockers....if you can keep them cool, they should OC decently. But with stock cooling, they get pretty hot.

yeah, you better get an ati silencer 5 if you want to overclock them. the gto2 is better bang for the buck because it can be flashed to XT with 100% success rate at a very low price... hope it was out when i got my XL but still im pretty happy with it

Maybe if you have water or Phase change cooling. With air you can not get decent OC with these cards. I got the Artic Cooling on my XL. It barely makes any difference. From core of 475/500 you cant even get to 500/525 without crashing. 485 is the highest I can get and I have the Artic Cooling on that card.

On my GTO2, you can go from 12 to 16 pipes and speed from 400/490 to 600/623 with good cooling. Now that"s some decent overclocking. 3DMark kill the XL and way much cheaper. 3Dmark of 6750 and I don't even have a good cooler on this card. I can only get around 5500 with the XL overclock.

For the price of the GTO2, you really can't beat it. It performs as well as the X850 XTPE and cost $200 +/- less.

Here is a GTO2 for $191 after MIR.

dunno what kind of x800xl you're running but my stock speed is 400/490. I can get 425/450 before artifacting with silencer. idle temps at 33c with load at 48c. not great oc's but i don't claim to be any good at it.

my card have a r430 core and its a crap overclocker... at least compared to other x800s with different cores.

My XL isn't a very good clocker either. 432/580 was all I could get out of it. Stock cooling but I don't think it had much more if aftermarket cooling was thrown in the mix.

yeah, comparing my oc's to other cards in the x800's I'm quite disappointed. Some people have reportedly gotten good oc's out of theirs but I have been unsucessful in my attempts. 425/450 and I start to get artifacts...
