I know there's been a lot of discussion over which one is better. But now that most of us have had some time to play around and tweak Windows XP, Do you still think Windows 2000 Pro is a better choice?

The reason I'm asking is I was digging thru some of my CD's I had laying around and found Win 2K Pro (did'nt know I had it!). I'm running XP now and like it, Although it takes massive tweaking to run fast. And I had to disable all the pretty effects and themes anyway to get some speed out of it. It basically looks like 98 but more stable. And I don't like all the other progs running in the backround all the time.
Do you think I'd be better off replacing it with Win 2K Pro. I do do some gaming so that may fall into play.

The thing I liked about Windows XP that I could game with it and not have too much problem.. but sometimes it would get laggy when I load IE while using ICQ and playing Mp3's... sucks lots of me ram..

Win2k is a good os overall cept for the gaming part.. if it were good with dx8 then damn best gaming platform then :D

So Win XP is better for gaming then? Cause if Win 2K Pro is good for gaming then I'll install it. I'd give it a shot anyway but I strapped a lot for time lately. And don't have the time to reinstall Win xp right now if things don't work out.

Win2k is good for gaming - id say just as good as XP if not better. Both great OSs. Hard to choose between em (thats why i have dual boot). :D

I would agree w/mrbill ,but w2k is much better with gaming, I never had to wait to get back to the desktop with w2k, exit game back to desktop no slowness at all!!! With Xp the desktop comes back a little at a time(not to slow)But slow enough to see a differance.

But is it just as compatible with games you can play like XP is? And also I've only got Service Pack 1, I don't have SP2. Is that going to make that much of a difference?

My line of thinking exactly! :)

If you want stability and speed, go Windows 2000, if you wanna look at a pretty desktop while Bill looks at what you have installed in your computer, use XP.

And Windows 2000 is just as good in games as 9x or ME. Hell, at LAN parties, my box'll smoke just about anybody else for framerates and real-life apps and such. All this talk about games is bullsh!t. There are very few games that won't work in Windows 2000 if the proper fixes are installed (and you can get those at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/).

Overall, I'd go Windows 2000 Professional.

Thank you, That's exactly what I was looking for. I think I'll give Win 2K Pro a run then. Win XP is just to bloated I think.
