Specifically, I'm looking for the thread about the "The great D0 E0 wars..quest for 4ghz".
Can anyone help me?

I don't recall that thread - but my 3.2E D0 does 4.0 GHz rock solid w/o a single mod to the P4C800-E Dlx, an XP-120, and a good OCZ 520 power supply. I still have over 2 years of warranty left on this board, too! (Modding it voids the warranty - and I have already gotten one replacement which would have been ~$200 out of my pocket otherwise).
Just one man's observation :)

i "read" the info on cap mods over at xs.org, the overall consensus was that due to the latest bios's released, the cap mod is unnecesarry. the most recent bios's supposedly fix all the vcore issues the p4c800 series had.
now, i have "read" because of the above, you don't need to bother with the vdroop mod either.
i'm supposed to work an 2 p4c boards for my buddies but i haven't gotten around to it, i do read lots of info thought. go over to motherboard>intel motherboards>asus intel motherboards here in the forums. do a search in that section for cap mods.
if you don't find anything head over to xs.org

I strongly beg to differ about the new BIOS fixing any Vcore doop. 1023 and 1024 did NOTHING to my Vcore droop - but adding a OCZ520 PSU helped a miniscule amount. I still show over 0.1v droop - but I manage to remain stable at 250FSB (4GHz) with VCore drooping to 1.31v (set to 1.45v in BIOS)
The BIOS can't fix an inadequate power section on this MoBo ;) .
