I recently purchased a Silverstone Zeus ST56ZF, I'm pretty happy with its performance.

The problem is that the fan is just to loud for me. i have a completely water cooled stystem and this is loudest componet next to the aquaextreme pump.

What would be the best fan to replace the stock sanyo denki 80mm fan.

Panaflo's are good. Depends on how loud you can live with. The L1A is livable, i find.

Would that panflo produce enough air movement to cool the psu?

I'm kinda thinking of making a plexi top and putting a 120mm fan in there would that be ok.

The sanyo-denki in the st56zf is rated at 4500rpm. Any fan close to or at that speed will be noisy. I have compared a 2350rpm sanyo-denki to a 2450rpm panaflo and I prefer the sanyo-denki. The review of the st56zf I read indicates the fan is on the noisy side, but the psu runs cool. The options as I see them are as follows:

1.Make sure the psu intake has cool air by creating a psu duct. Usually a psu duct will direct air through a couple of optical drive bays directly to the psu intake. There is an example at spcr for the P150 /neo he. http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=26066&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=120
2.Replace the fan with a medium speed model. Either a sanyo-denki or panaflo would be fine. If the intake air is cool, a medium speed fan should be ok.
3.Use an external fan controller to run the stock fan at lower speeds.
4.Replace the stock fan with a slower speed model and add an 80mm fan to the intake side. Seal the extra vents similar to an ocz powerstream or antec sp 2.0 inline setup. Two fans in series will will not increase cfm, but will double the pressure. The psu components and heat sinks are placed for inline air flow. I would stay with 80mm fans.

Are you able to monitor the psu rpm and if so, what is the speed range? - FG

medium speed 80mm fans

panaflo fba08a12m-1bx (2450 rpm)
sanyo-denki 109r0812m4011 (2350 rpm)
bi-sonic bp802512l (2100 rpm)
papst 8412n/2gmle (2050 rpm)

I like the duct idea but i would still have to replace the psu fan.
where would i be able to purchase some of those fans?

I bought the sanyo-denki on ebay from thermalfx.com for about $10. Sanyo-denki's are very good. Panaflo's are available at a lot of places, but I like digikey.com because they have fresh stock. The market is flooded with sub standard panaflo batches rejected by oem's. Although I have a couple of good medium speed panaflo's that came from either jab-tech.com or sidewindercomputers.com. The bi-sonic can be purchased from mouser.com. I don't have a good source for papst. They are usually more expensive than the others.

Using a duct will help keep the fan from ramping up, but ultimately the combination of the stock fan controller and high speed fan may prevent quiet operation. For a simple solution you could bypass the psu fan controller and use a $5 fanmate to lower the fan speed to an acceptable level making sure the exhaust temperature doesn't rise too much.

It looks like a great psu with huge heatsinks and good efficiency so there is no reason that it could not be modified to run as quiet as a neo he or sp 2.0 500w.

thanks for all the help
