So is alcohol good for a water cooling system?
Im asking about alcohol as in Vodka? has anyone tried to use Vodka or any other drink in their computer? Wouldnt u want to say "yep my box is running vodka through its system." Cept u want it to actually cool too!

From what I understand alcohol works, but water works better for heat transfer.
Speaking of alcohol, I think I have had enough. I am having more trouble than usuall spelling. It is nice to take a personal day :D

Oh, yeah....Welcome to the forum.
hic!
YEs welcome to the forum!
I would stick with water!
I haven't tried liquid cooling yet but if and when I do I can think of one irrefutable reason for me not to use alcohol: I have a cat, and if there ever was a leak (obviously when the machine is turned off or else there'd be sparks from either water or alcohol) I wouldn't want my cat getting into anything that could harm him wether it's alcohol or antifreeze or whatever. If you have pets or small children (who know how to open a computer case) then anything but water just adds one more potential headache to your list.
My 2 cents.
Welcome aboard.

using alcohol such as vodka can be better because it has a much higher viscosity, therefor you can move alot more of it faster than water and in turn putting more liquid through the waterblock...and expecially better if you are gonna do some supercooling where you cool the radiator in some way, then you definatly need some kind of liquid that wont freeze like water, and you could just get a good combination of alcohol/water so that it wont freeze as quick as water, but is very viscous
Vodka is 40proof - anything 40proof or higher is flammable, do you want vodka leaking on your more-than-warm AMD? or hitting a few contacts of ecetricity .....
If you want something better than water - try running DEX-COOL.
Heh. I'd rather spend the money on getting vodka for my computer on getting vodka for me :)
I can just imagine bleeding the system:
one for you (pump)
one for me!
one for you
one for me . . . .
And if you ever ran out of booze at a LAN party, you could just crack your pc open and start dispensing drinks out of the radiator.
I would imagine that you'd have to use the most ghetto vodka you could possibly find (at $40-50 for a bottle of Absolut or Stolie, thats a little too good for my computer, and my computer isn't going to get a headache if I use cheep vodka). 'round here, thats Prince Igor. $14 or less for a micky. and a $1000 dollar hangover the next morning :).

DEX-COOL is terrible for your comptuer and great for your car. it's just as bad as antifreeze in terms of viscosity, its thermal properties are worse then antifreeze and it comes with some added wierdisms to it saying that theres alot of things you can't add to it without it becomming very corrosive too... things like water wetter for example if i recall correctly.
water is some of the best stuff on earth for liquid cooling and i'd definately recommend staying with it if at all possible. add a little bit of water wetter or Problends 40-Below additive to it and you've got a winner.
my recommendation, don't cut it unless you ABSOLUTELY have to. check the link stickied to the top of the cooling forum if you want specifics. The decreased viscosity of alcohol will make up for some of the differences in its loss of thermal properties as a heat transfer liquid, but usually only barely enough to let you break even with what water will provide you with anyhow. and vodka is thicker then water, so you won't even get the benefits of the viscosity to make up for the loss in heat transfer potential.
good luck. keep us posted.
welcome to the forums mr man.

alchol?
yes please
by the way dont bother, water is a safe and good conductor of heat

i guess the vodka you use is 40 proof, but i use 80 proof, Grey Goose is the best vodka out there by the way......vodka works great for cooling a computer, and as long as you seal it up well and test it then you shouldnt have a problem unless you screw around with the system.......im gonna try using some kind of alcohol because im gonna put the radiator in an ice chest to see how cold i can get the water :p it will be neat maybe ill get some dry ice too, thats pretty cold also

what about mineral oil?
i have heard it has a great head conductivity, and not only that, its non conductive... so it could leak all over your comp, and no problem. not sure about viscousity though.

Drink the vodka and use water.

mineral oil can be used but its not as good as water we use it to cool large wire resistors when we do some types of testing. Its about like a cooking oil maybe a little lighter though. I have seen it boil its doesn't smell nice at all :)
You could try Tequila as well. I would imagine that you would have to try a wide range of alcohol to find one that would work. Hmmm, white rum might work . . .:)

Don't forget the worm!!! - great visual for determining the temp!

sorry I meant 40% not proof - guess I was drinking when I posted that.
