Can Win98 be as fast as WinMe in Boot & Shutdown?

Well how about it is there anyway to make Windows 98 boot and shutdown as fast as Windows Me? Thanks

Boot up can sometimes be made significantly faster by going to Start-->Run type in MSCONFIG. You now have the MS Configuration Utility before you. First tab it starts at has a few startup options. Choose Selective Startup by the checkbox and a few options down below should be made available to you.

Uncheck the boxes that say Process AUTOEXEC.BAT File and uncheck Process CONFIG.SYS file. These are DOS files that 99% of the time are never needed. If you run programs that require DOS support in a true DOS environment you don't want to uncheck those. Otherwise, it is completely safe and you can always go back and change it anytime you wish.

What this does is skip the loading of DOS device drivers on boot. Since WinME has DOS support removed, you receive somewhat better bootup times.

As far as quicker shut downs...I don't really remember much since I never shut my PCs down (nor do I run Win98 on any of them).

Adrian's RojakPot (http://www.adriansrojakpot.com) may have a guide for this. It's a pretty good tweak site.

Actually I find Win XP to be slower on bootup and shutdown. Over all speed seems a bit slower then win 98 as well. But the system stability makes up for all of that!

i find that to be UNBELIEVABLE..........................and INTERESTING.... Here is a TIP how to make your computer load FASTER....for any verion fo winXP

HEAD TO MICROSOFT.COM and download Bootvis.exe......and choose "optimize system" under "trace" menu..............and you will believe how fast winXP load everything up

hrm..I'll have to try that..if it'll make my xp boot faster..I'll be impressed

I upgraded 2k to xp (originally intended just to try it) and noticed my boot time was about half what it used to be!

Want a cool fast shut down ability - i mean within seconds??

Right click your desktop
Go to 'new'
then go to 'shortcut'
In the command line type in :

C:\windows\rundll.exe user.exe,exitwindows
********
Click next,
Name it something simple like - fast shutdown,

Go to your desktop and duoble click it - now how sweet is that!
It it the ONLY way I shut down now on my rig.

A faster way to restart - when you go to start - shutdown - then select reboot, hold the shift key then click on the button - hold the shift key until it restarts... it forces it to skip the process of rebooting the comp and only reboots Windows... and it does not work in WinME.
