View Full Version : How to break a video card?
Ok seeeeee I had this little accident that involved glue and thermal grease + my geforce2 mx card HAHAHHAA dont ask ^_^;;
Yeah anyways to take it off i used my dremel sander to slightly take off some of the glue off the ram and i SLIGHTLY also took off part of the ram HAHAHA yah..... so anyways my point is if i slightly scratch the ram on my video card does it ruin it? I am not sure why the card isnt working. Its either because i SLIGHTLY ( did i mention slightly? ) scratched the ram or because my other little accident with thermal grease covering most of the card...
i now dunked the whole card in windex/water and am sticking it in front of a fan to clean.
So do you think its the thermal grease all over it or the dremel sanding tool kk ^^;;;;;;

from what i understand the video ram is very sensative. I'm not so sure soaking the thing in water overnight was a good idea either. I think you can say goodbye to that card:eek:

SWEET SASSY MOLASSY! PLEASE DO NOT EVER TOUCH A COMPUTER AGAIN!
haha j/k, well learn from your mistakes i guess. Heres a little equation you might find usfull in the future:

i am so utterly confused by what you have done to that poor memory card. first, you took a dremel to the ram? ok, thats not normal but i guess if you were under the influence or something that might have seemed good at the time. hell, a really sharp knife to scrape with would have been better. also, water + electronics doesnt work... i think that would have killed it if the scratch didnt.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, u stuck your video card in windex/water to clean it, then put in front of a fan to dry, thanks kid i got my good laugh for the day in :p :cough: MORON! :cough:

First off that doesn't need to be here. Second can't you remember when you were new to comps? Think about how many stupid things you did. We all come into this forum at different degrees of education and we all learn from there. So just ease up.
WOW!! For real? well ... make sure she is COMPLETELY DRY!! getting some rubbing alcohol and a lintless clouth and gently wipe the card over before reinstalling it then try firing her up.... see what happens - most likely it is toast but only one way to know for sure.

i do remember making dumb mistakes, but i have never fried anything or put anything that has anything to do with a computer anywhere NEAR water (unless watercooling) where the water is contained, so that was pretty stupid of you i have to say, but i hope you learn not to do that, and not to use a dremel on pretty much any computer part (unless its the case) sooo......
have fun
Update: I am not a moron, I am a broke desperate fool!
There IS a difference! ;)
Oh yah, and it didnt work >P
Too bad, guess i screwed it up...
Oh, and the reason i used a dremel is because the glue on the ram chips was very stuck, I could not remove anything with a knife. The dremel actually worked until I got a bit edgy ^_^;;;
And I do not see what is so bad about water and a video card...
I mean i DID dry it very well...

LMAO
If money is an issue - go to a GEForce2 GTS - they run great and are very reasonable in price and if you were runnign an GEForce2 MX - then the GTS will be a noticable upgrrade....
Bang for the buck is always a great way to go... then you OC that and get even more!
*looks in his wallet*
...what can I get for $8?

heres a quick fix
sorry i was just giving the kid a hard time. I do remember when i was a newbie the dumest thing i ever did was plug something in the wrong plug-in on my mobo, when i booted up i noticed smoke comin out of the case :eek:, and it ruined my mobo, i wasn't trying to be ignorant i was just messing withg him cause he made a fatal error :(. My apologies. isn't it just common sense though not to put sensitive electrical components in water:confused:
NOTE: i like to give ppl a hard time, but i wasn't serious i was just razzin him
P.S. I'm really sorry that u ruined your video card, think of this misfortune as a learning experience, just be more carefull in the future ;)

yeah but you dont dip your components into the water cooler now do you?

Too bad sooooo sad but that card is dead I would say, sorry bout your luck but you learn by expensive mistakes....
I slipped putting heatsink on my MSI K7t266 Pro raid ddr board and I damaged some trace wires leading to cpu. Lucky I found a shop that was able to reapir and it works like new, otherwise it would have been a $200 canadian boo boo

Well if you have a submersible pump... j/k.
Guess mistakes do happen..
But we learn from them :D
I once dumped a 32 oz cup of hot coffee directly into the keyboard of a laptop computer while it was running. Pulled the plug disassembled the laptop. Rinsed everything in tap water. Dried it off with paper towels and a hair dryer. Put it back together and it ran like a champ until I sold it 2 years later.

I poured alcohol over my motherboard AGP area works like a charm!
Yah I tried pouring Goof-Off and rubbing alcohol all over the video card too didnt work ;p

this is the deal, the electrostatic charges alone from a peice of power eq can kill chips, the spinnig of the dremel makes magnetic wave due to the copper wire inside it.
THere is static and other kinds of small charges stored in parts of harware after it is unplugged, that is why you can touch and old monitor tuvbe and DIE, the have to be grounded out, same as a video card, dipping it in water can allow it to fry itself, not good. IF you are ever trying to remove grease/paste, or any non solid substance, heat it up and it will get more pliable and come off easier. Other than that welcome and dont get discourged, i just rebooted PC in middle of a scandisk and lost 56 gigs of data that took over a yeart to get, talk about a REAL bone head i got u beat 10x over, so laught it off, i know i did

WHOA WHOA WHOA, STEP BACK A SECOND. This person was not being an idiot. Water does not ruin most components. As long as the component is not in use at the time, no harm was done. I literally wash components, and as long as they are dry before putting them back in, everything should be ok. I am not sure about Windex though... certain chemicals can damage components.

even if the component is not in use doesnt it still have capacitors that are holding a charge? Sorry if that is stupid...

I agree with Suprawy-
I was Just a part of a similar discussion in a different forum-Trawlers-regarding people who wanted to know if their cell phones could swim. They had instances where they were submersed in saltwater-very hard on components- from hours to days and were able to retrieve them. They washed them with DISTILLED water to remove the salt and thoroughly dry them. One guy even went as far as placing it in a vacuum chamber to remove any excess water. Again use distilled water and let it dry out for a very long time and if you think its long enough wait a bit longer.
Cheers

Yes very true... and not stupid.

The capacitors on a video card are very small and few. No harm should be done. On components with larger or more capacitors, harm could be done, not if you use distilled water though -- it is somewhat non-electrically conductive.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I too have had to learn the limits of a dremel tool. Read it in my sig. "A dremel tool and a dream" Next time don't whip out your tool so quick ;)
I killed a GF2MX in a heatsink experiment and upgraded to a GF2 GTS with ddr ram. I didn't notice much of a difference, only in the 3dmark scores showing the card being a little faster (duh because it is zoop) In real life the differences weren't earth shattering. Anyways... If you do decide to get a new card I would go one step further. But we all know money decides all in the end. So get what you can afford. Sorry about your loss, If you need money I know a witch doctor in Africa that needs people for his head shrinking class :D
