Does it happen everytime? What is your fsb at? is the card seated properly? What type of card is it?(i.e. visiontek, pony, leadtek).

Make sure you do not have agp sidebanding or agp fastwrites enabled in the bios.

Drop your overclock to default just to make sure thats not causing the problem.

If you were using a driver other than what was supplied with win xp with your previous card make sure all the files and registry entries are removed.

yes, it happens every time. fsb is set at 140/35mhz. i ran this system previously with an asus gf3, and a ati 16mb agp i had laying around until today. the card is a leadtek, the fan is functioning properly, it is seated well and i have a 400w power supply. do you think i should try uninstalling xp? i think this may be a problem with the card..

Have you taken the card out? Are you oc it? Do what Placid said and if that doesn't work try replacing it again with another video card and see if it works. If the other card works try taking everything out except the video card and ram and hdd and see what happens. If it still is screwing up try an different driver if this doesn't help then i'd say you have a bad card.

although if it were a bad card, would it not just cause a boot fail? im going to try this old card out, im not oc'ing (yet). and i have made the bios changes that placid suggested.

I need help with this card too. Leadtek installed these really weird nVidia drivers that worked well (6584 in 3dmark2001 @ 1024x768), but I thought I'd give the 21.83 nVidia drivers a try. Major hose job. Windows reports after I restart that the video adapter is incorrect. The nVidia driver is an exe so I copied the temp folder so I could manually see what's going on, and when I try to force windows98se to take the driver, it says "nVidia GeForce3 Ti 500" is not written specifically for the selected hardware. If I continue, when windows restarts, it hangs after applying settings. I can hit the reset button and come back in again, but windows doesn't last long before it craps out. No matter what, even with the display adapter showing nVidia GeForce3 Ti 500, the best I get is 16 bit and 1024x768. No other tabs are visible too. What gives here???

You just can't change to standard vga in display properties and reboot. You have to uninstall the nVidia drivers in Add/Remove Programs, so that when you do reboot, the OS has to reinstall them. At that time, I could have cancelled and run the exe or in this case, I pointed to the temp directory I saved. Worked like a charm. I went from 6484 scores to a whoping 8093 @ 1024x768x32!! Not bad aye?

you most certainly can! I've done it this way for many many moons. It's really the easiest way to remove all the drivers. In fact, what you are doing is removing all the drivers and attempting the remove the registry entry, which is still there after you remove it, since the backup registry would be loaded if another driver fails to load. anyhow, installing the standard works, only if you reboot and let it install, then change the driver when you get back, many folks seem to think that you can switch, reboot, then when it restarts, instead of letting it finish the install, when it detects, they install the new one, that doesn't work, which is prolly what a lot are doing. If your monitor is going berserk, make sure you don't have a higher than acceptable refresh rate set for your monitor, you can eliminate this as the cause by changin it to "adapter default" in the display props. Other than that, i'd say you have a driver/os or dx conflict. run dx diag and see what it says.

just another suggestion to throw around.
in some cases and bios's you have to make sure that the vram is set to the correct type. there are two types, i cannot remember off hand but it gave me major hastles when i upgraded my card.
so just check it if its available and change it, if it doesn't work then change it back.

Good luck
