View Full Version : PIII 700 O/C temps

I've just o/c'd my PIII 700 to 805mhz and temps have gone up from 29/30 idle and 44/45 at load to 31/32 idle and 46/47 at load. I'm using stock cooling - these seem high to me or is this normal. I want to push further (933 hopefully) but don't want to fry my chip. Are these temps OK or do I need to get extra cooling?

Yep. Those temps are a bit high, and before pushing further you need a cooling solution other than the stock hs/f. There's quite a few people around here better versed in the newer hs/f's than I am and will give ya some reccomends :D

Are you sure your HS is making proper contact with the CPU? My stock HS got my p3 700 up to 135fsb with temps lower than yours.

What type of motherboard do you have? Is the CPU socket or slot? If the CPU is socket mounted on a sloket then remove the sloket and hold the CPU up to the light and look for light between the HS and CPU core. (the core is the glass looking thing about .25"x.15" on the top of the CPU). If you have a socket type MB you may have to remove the MB to ensure you have good contact. If the CPU is the slot type you may need to remove the plastic backing cover... I have no clue if this blocks you line of site.

Welcome to the board. Search when youhave a question then post. Most likely someone here has already had and solved the same problem yoiu may have.

I've got an Asus CUV4X-EA motherboard and its an fcpga chip. I'll try reseating the heatsink tomorrow and apply some better thermal paste. I'll post back with results.

I think those are pretty mid temperatures.. mid 40's is ok but dont push the cpu for anymore overclocking ...

just dont let it hit 50's and you'll be fine.

btw you have case fans..(they really important)

Those temps are way too high for overclocking. I have a P-III 700 overclocked @ 1050 MHz right now as I type this post. Full load temps never exceed 40 degrees. I have a lapped GlobalWin FOP heatsink with a Sunon 80mm high output fan, Arctic Silver thermal paste, fan on my northbridge greenie heatsink, extra case fans, etc. Most coppermines I've played with will do ok in the mid 40 degree range at default settings, but start getting unstable at those temps when overclocked. Trust me on this one, get a better CPU cooler and good thermal paste, you'll thank me later.

go to svcompucycle and get the CBG-38 all copper heatsink, it doesnt perform all that well but for 12 bucks it is awesome....

Good news, I cleaned off the heatsink and chip and applied some fresh thermal paste. At the same time I did a couple of case mods - 80mm fan in top of case as an extra exhaust and an old heatsink fan mounted on the side directly opposite the cpu as an extra intake (not exactly a pro finish, but effective). My temps are now : -

700mhz (standard)
idle - 28/29
load - 40/41

805 mhz (115 fsb)
idle - 29/30
load - 41/42

A massive improvement and totally stable at this speed, I'll let u guys know how I get on with any further o/c.
What is the highest temp I should go to before I shell out for a better heatsink?

If you're still at default voltage, that's good. Trouble is, the next step up or two in FSB starts running your PCI bus quite a bit out of spec and you'll start getting borderline hot again. Stability will be an issue again. If you're at default voltage, there is still a lot left in that CPU... IF you get a better cooler and make the big jump up to 133 FSB, your PCI and AGP buses will be back in spec again. You will probably have to increase CPU core voltage a little to do that which increases temps even more. At this point it will be critical to have a real good CPU cooler. Remember, you will thank me afterwards if you get a better heatsink/fan. Think about it... 933 MHz is calling your name with the proper cooling.
