View Full Version : Are WindowsXP and Windows2000 drivers compatable?

If there's a driver I need (or would like) and there's no WindowsXP specific version, will a Windows2000 version also work just as well? Are there any problems with doing this?

The main reason I ask is DirectX8.0a. There's a Windows 2000 version, but not a WindowsXP version.

XP comes with DX8 installed, no need to look for an update as it has what you need built in.

As far as drivers go, not in my experience. XP just usually told me that the driver was not compatible and wouldn't allow me to use it. It wouldn't be wise to do so anyway.

Well which is it? Can Windows 2000 drivers be used in WindowsXP or not?

Jon said it doesn't work. So I'd like a third person's opinion, or more, whenever more people happen upon this thread.

I've used win2k drivers for several things with XP. They all seemed to work fine.

I'd recommend that you e-mail the manufacturer and ask them directly. Either ask them if the 2000 drivers will work with XP, or when they plan/expect to release the XP drivers. I'm going to guess you don't have XP yet, but if you do, just try it

Alright, then. When I get XP, I'll just try stuff out. If it doesn't work, I'll ask the manufacturers.

XP is basically 2000 with some dangly bits. Same set of core files. I run XP drivers in 2000, and indeed, most drivers are for XP AND 2000..........

reddeathdrinker has a point..........using win 2k drivers with win XP is similar to using win 98 drivers in WinMe. At first Micrsosoft went along with a numbering convention, thus Windows 2, 3,3.1,3.11 were pretty straightforward. Someone at Redmond came up with a marketing ploy......Year based naming! So 9x is the retail name for windows 4.x.xxxx.xxxx. 2k/XP are both of the 5.x.xxxx line and thus have drivers most compaitible with each other.

They are similar.. You can once used nvidia drivers on win xp that are win2k now they made em seperatly.

Hmmmm......from what they are saying over at www.nvidia.com the XP/2k drivers are one download. Only the XP/64 bit drivers are seperate. Go figure.
