View Full Version : I found the limit of my Presler 920 @ 3.8 Ghz.

I hit, 4.0Ghz just fine, however it would not pass PCMark 04.
I uped the voltage and went to 3.9 Ghz, but still didn't pass the bench. When I went to reboot to change it back, it said, "OC failed, unable to increase VCore voltage."
So now I am at 1.325VCore and 270 FSB - stable.
Is this the final frontier of my PSU? Will getting a beefier PSU solve my delema?

I would suggest alittle more vcore, maybe the MCH voltage, and your DDR voltage slightly.
M, that's only the OC limit if you limit the Vc you give it or can give it (load temps). Judging from all the Preslers we've seen, even at the very worst, it should be able to do 4GHz stable on stock air with around 1.40-1.425Vc.
That message that you got said "Overclocking OR Overvoltage failed, enter BIOS and fix...", not that Vc was unable to be raised ;)
That PSU is still going to limit you at some point. With that monster vid card and clocks going up on the Presler...I'd already have a "good" one on order and plans to take that Antec back :D

Links please :)
In the mean time, I need to actively cool my passive water cooler, I'm going to stick a big fan on top of the unit, that should work just fine.
OCZ Powerstream 520W (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817711002) -- can probably find cheaper elsewhere.
Sparkle FPS550PLG-SLI (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103517) -- sure I've seen this for $95-99 somewhere, but can't remember where it was :)
Silverstone Zeus 560W (http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=22_160&products_id=3864) -- cheapest I found, Newegg has it too for + $20. This is the one I just got and got it from performance-pc.
If you want to spend $$, probably the best by a good margin (don't let the 510W rating fool you):
PCP&C 510 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817703001) -- $20 cheaper on pcpowercooling.com right now (http://www.pcpowercooling.com/products/viewproduct.php?show=T51SLI).

Hey Ross, how do you like the ST56ZF?
It's nice for $115 ;) After reading about so many seeing low 12V rails on it, I tested before I installed it and it was 12.14V, so I popped it open and upped it to 12.50V before I put it in, just in case. Initially, 12V only dropped .05V on load (with 4.8GHz/moderate Vc). My OCZ 600W 12V rail dropped that same .05V too, so I wasn't concerned with it. With 5.3GHz, higher Vc and longer load, it dropped .09V, but that's the worst I've seen....nothing like in the reviews and if I hadn't upped the 12V, it would still be over 12.00V on the rail.
I am having some stability issues, but since I am benching higher than I ever have thanks to the PSU, I can't say it has anything to do with it ;) I run my mobo pretty hard (vmods) and after I switched from dual rail OCZ to this one, I had to do some "detuning". I thought after switching from a dual rail that when the CPU goes on load > 5.4-5.5GHz or so, it draws so much juice that it's robbing from the mobo and making things a tad unstable...the mem in particular because I run it pretty hard when I bench ;)
It may very well be my settings or the proc since I've never benched this high (good sign), but I turned my vMCH back to stock, PCIe voltage back to stock and couple of other settings back to AUTO and it was just outstanding last night...benching almost 5.6GHz SPi with DDR1030 4-2-3-4 on the mem (2.60V) and my highest PCMark04 completion w/score (5.4GHz).
How's that for an answer to a simple question? :D

^^^ LOL sweet, thanks for the long-winded but useful response. I'm going back and forth between getting the ST56ZF or a Powerstream 520 for my new Presler system.
Yeah, I kinda just let it all fly, LOL. That's a tough call between those 2. OCZ is definitely good, the case looks better IMHO and there are adjustments for all 3 rails. It's only drawback is that it's DEEP @ 7" long. Zeus is just 5.5" and I need every inch trying to pack a PSU in behind the compressor.
