View Full Version : Over 1000Mhz, Win98 Protection error?
How come when i tried to overclock my Duron 800 to 1 Ghz or more, i always got Window 98 Protection error?
(My comp still POST)
Or maybe sometimes Sys.ini damged (those system files).
Is it that my Voltage isn't hight enough to make it stable?

win98 can't handle the PAIn...........that's why it crash
there is not thing wrong with voltage
if win98 doesn't crash when you don't overclock, don't go to 1000
try to go to 900 and see what happen?
get enough cooling for computer case and CPU?
if not, RUN to the store now and buy 1.........and see if it solves the problem
otherwise, like i said, lower the speed from 1000 to 950...900..850..and see what happen?
HAPPY overcloking:)
Usually one of three things. Memory can't handle the bus speed (if overclocking using system bus over multiplier). In this case, increase your VIO voltage (if possible) from 3.3V to 3.4V. If that does no good, you could possibly reaching what your memory can handle. In this case, try increasing the m,ultiplier and lowering the FSB to reach approcimately the same CPU speed.
Secondly, your hard drive may not be able to handle the higher bus frequency. In this case you have no other option than to lower your FSB and raise the multiplier to stay around 1GHz. Otherwise, another hard drive may be needed that can handle it.
Thirdly, your IDE controller may not be able to handle the bus speed you're at. This basically works in the same way as the hard drive. If it's too high it will corrupt data. This is what it sounds like to me the most as I have problems with my RAID controllers when going over 155MHz on the FSB. If it is a VIA chipset you can try using some active, or better, cooling on your Northbridge/Southbridge controllers (i.e. heatsink and fan).
If you post fine at these speeds and get no crashes other than the errors you stated then I would say your CPU is no problem. Just make sure temps are at a decent level under load (no more than 50C under full load) and have relatively good airflow throughout the case.
Experiment with each of these and you should be able to narrow down the problem.
Good luck!
EDIT:
Should've looked at your system specs before posting. I would say your memory is fine. Since it's DDR, you may want to try upping the voltage on it to maybe 2.7. I doubt this will do any good, however since it's rated for 150MHz. Sounds mostly related to either the hard drive or the IDE/RAID controller.
My 800 gets to 1053mhz with 1.85v but won't go any higher. When I bump the core voltage by .2v I can get to 1150 but the 5v line becomes unstable. Maybe you need a better ps. What's your chips stepping code?

CPU is so CHEAP nowdays.................why overclock when you can go out and buy it?
if you want to experience little bit......it is...ok?
otherwise, why make you feel more HEADACHE and waste of time?
I think is my PSU, my voltage is going up and down from 1.84- 1.86 and when i use my cd-rom the voltage went to 1.84 from 1.86.
