My girlfriend is having a problem with her laptop. About two weeks ago her sound started skipping, like a scratched cd. It happens when she plays downloaded music in any program (winamp, itunes, wmp), when she plays a cd or dvd, and when she watches streaming media over the internet.

Also, it happens with the onboard speakers as well as through headphones.

We've already upgraded her sound drivers, made sure she's free of viruses/spyware, etc, and tried different players. We've tried upgrading codecs. She's at school some 600 miles away but I can still walk her through things.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I believe it is a problem with the native codecs of WMP. Reinstall the whole program if possible.

It's with every program., not just wmp. I'll have her update it though.

could it be a r.a.m problem? is the laptop being generally slow? hows the hard drive space?

Hard drive was replaced less than two months ago. Could be ram but it doesn't sound right that it's with just sound...

i get the same problem when trying to watch dvds on my sisters laptop. its brand new, but it stil skips dvds. it could be that the system isnt fast enough, do you have specs? its gotta be a software problem, i think that she should reinstall xp. but does she have the disk? you said she is very far away.

The native codecs installed with wmp is used by all programs when trying to play music. I've had this problem before.
