Hey guys, after about a month of reading posts on this forum, I've decided to choose an AMD for my new system. However, I severly lack any knowledge of AMD's. I need your input as the differeces between an Athalon XP, MP, and any other AMDs. Also, if you could recommend a MB, it would be very helpfull.
I want to use the new system for mostly web browsing and word processing, and almost no gaming- so the system doesn't have to a monster. But, I do want to do some video editting. I want the system to be able to handle that. The editing is will be very simple. And finally, I do not want the budget to go over $500.
And lastly, I can salvage the hard drive (40 Gb; 7200; 8.5), and the CDR (24/10/80 from my current system.

Hmmm . . . If you're not gaming, then I would say . . .:

Asus A7V133
AMD Thunderbird 1000 (if you can find it)
ThermalTake Volcano II Cu6
384 Micron Infineon (or Crucial) PC133 (its cheep, so you might want more)
ATI Radeon 8500 DV
SB Live! (Platnum, MP3, Audgey . . . Depends on how good of sound you want)

The rest you could fill out as you go. Thats most of the important stuff.

I haven't been here all that long, but I can tell you everyone here is helpful and friendly.

You can certainly save mucho denero by going AMD--and you won't be disappointed with the performance, either. However, video editing DOES require a lot of horsepower--even for simple stuff. The good news is that you shouldn't have to break your budget to do so. You can probably get a Athlon XP 1700+ for $150, and a VIA KT266A mobo for an additional $100. You probably won't be able to salvage your old memory, so expect to spend $50 on 512 MB of PC2100 SDRAM. That leaves you about $200 to spend on a new video card. I think you can probably get one of those new gForce 2 Ti cards for under that. Keep in mind any shipping that you might need to cover as well.

BTW, where can I find one of those 80X speed read CD-RW's?!?!?
