View Full Version : CD-R vs. CD-RW?
OK, other than CD-RW being rewritable, are there any other major differences between the two CD types of CD-R and CD-RW? I'd just like to know for future reference, and for stuff like putting Linux (bootable/install) ISO files on CD-RWs and stuff liek that.
none. CDR have a long life though. 30 years before they expire. forgot CDRW

30yrs, I highly doubt that, more like 5 years, I have Cds that are failing to read that are not as old as that, and all I did was burn and store them. I would use CD-Rs, CD-RWs fail to read in my experiences after about 10 burns

Rewritablility is amazing though, especially useful with backing up files.
Are you sure you can boot from CD-RWs?

The difference in the way data is written to them (the reflective layer) makes it harder for some older readers and OS'es to read the data on CD-RW's. Of course, it is also dependent on the method of writing selected.
If using a CD-RW and packet writing, older OS'es like 98 and earlier will need a UDF reader installed.
Also, not all car players can read CD-RW's.
