which video card would get me at least 100FPS in Counter-strike Source?

not much of a price limit but must be reasonable (nothing over like 300 to 400 bucks)

resolution probably at 1280x1024 to 1600x1200

I run 1600x1200, max, with 2x AA (4x has funny colors in CS, has for every card I've ever had), and I sometimes get near 180FPS. My card runs about $180, last time I checked.

like when? like when staring at a wall?

realistically, there is no videocard that will give you a constant 100fps. even a top of the line everything computer will dip to 40-50 in heavy firefights/smoke/nades going off.

7800GT. Best card @ 300$ range imo.

everyone says this, i don't believe it. 100fps steady means you don't drop below 100fps. sorry, i don't buy it.

there are no cards out right now that will peg your fps at a CONSTANT 100fps like i get in cs 1.6 or cs:cz. i think that's what the OP was asking.

Beatbox has it. I side with him in this argument.

I have a 7800gt and can play with everything maxed and get between 60-130+ fps at 10x7

You budget now becomes your limiting factor.

You might be able to get 100fps constant, but I doubt its on any decent setting.

7800GT and Opteron 175@2.75ghz:

1280x1024 all setings MAX with AA on MAX.

Constant 145-160fps while walking, rarely drops below 100fps, lowest I've seen in a match of 20 minutes would be 90fps. Goes up to 240fps at times, ie. defusing bomb, lol.

So I'd say a 7800GT should give about what you need, CS:S is a bit based on CPU power, so OCing would help.

Smoke kills. I have to put it on the lowest setting for my mom's (mine has no interweb atm) pc to play it. Not saying much when her video card is like $40, a GeForce 4 MX440

Gonna have to agree here. I get a stable 120fps for the most part. Even with my GTX and setup it tends to dip in low 60's-70's during smokes ONLY. IF CS is all you do then just get a 6800GS or GT. It's best bang for buck for CS:S.

if you really just want to play source... dont get a Nvidia card... get an ATI card... the source engine was designed to run on ATI hardware... and will run faster on it too... so i disagree with the 6800 idea... you'd be better off with any form of the x800

Agreed, and I'm pro-nVidia.

yes, this is true in the X8XX VS 6XXX series.

But in the 7XXX VS X1XXX series the nvidia Cards keep UP.

Only the new x1900Xt cards give nvidia a good wooping due to its 48Pixel Shaders

OK so the 7 series keeps up but its more expensive than say a GTO2 so that still makes ATi the winner just for price:performace ratio.

If you can afford it you might as well get one of the new gen cards just so that it lasts a little longer but apart from that theres not a huge reason to spend a lot of money on a 7***/X1k when a GTO2 will do. I always buy gfx cards on the basis of what I'm playing not what performs best across the board. I play a lot of D3D games so ATi is the better option for me. I also like the AIW features and I hope to get a X1800XL AIW just because of that even though for about the same I could get the XT.

here's a large thread where a lot of ppl with high end rigs are saying they get huge dips.
