Well the official word is that the new XP trace tape does not work! Apparently the exposed bridges are sunk into the chip and not raised what so ever. I got the official word from one retailer (won't mention names) today after I placed my order last night. Here is some of what was written in the email:
"We're overclockers, and we support the community that has supported us. I won't knowingly sell a product that doesn't do what it should. We're honorable, and fair, and will handle this as best we can. Since we're having no luck using this version of the tape on XPs (it still works great on MPs, Durons, and T-Birds)..."
"I'm sorry to say that odds are high it will not work with newer versions of the XP cpus that are currently being sold."
"it is not working for us. We're "old hands" at using trace tape. We can't get it to work."
I read somewhere that there's some "sanding" involved on some chips, to get to the bridges....:(

Which is why I'm sticking to a purely FSB overclock strategy when my chip gets here...I got myself a 3 year warranty, and I'm goign to save it, damnit!
Check out Tom's hardware guide they have up close picture comparison of the xp's. The difference between them is interesting. http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/01q4/011031/index.html
edit: this is the right page: http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/01q4/011031/xpvsp4-01.html

Sanding right on the "dots" Mr. B.?
The trace tape will be arriving friday.
I also got the e-mail saying they will pay for the return shipping and refund the money.
I would like to unlock my cpu thou, I wonder if sanding the area lightly so the bridge is not recessed would work.
Well I have a couple days to think about it.

I think so.... I can't recall where I read this...(Anandtech or AOA?)
I believe you sand in the area of the dots, to make that area the same level as the dots (where they're recessed).
I just got a 10x jeweler's loupe...next time I have the XP out, I'll probably try to unlock it somehow... I dunno though...it's running rock solid at 1.7GHz right now...:D
Why mess with a good thing?
