If I own a copy of Win98 on a CD that came with a Compaq PC, that only installs to a Compaq (Which no longer exists). Am I able to install Win98 from another CD and transfer the license agreement and code from the original Compaq?
(Hope this makes sense)
so, are you saying that the 98 cd that you about to use is not yours? if so, you can't use it :D and for the win98 for the compaq, too bad, you only can use it for a compaq. who knows if you use it anyway:D

You own a Win98 license. You can use the OS on one PC. Doesn't matter where the disc comes from really. MS will sell you a license on its own, if you want to run on 2 PC's.........
MS aren't worried about the cost of the actual disk, just the hefty license charges for the actual software........
Probably not,
From your description it sounds like the CD is BIOS locked and will only load on your particular model compaq.
hmmm here is a question
you bought a legal copy of windows ... rig one dies... can you carry that cd to rig #2??
legally .... or are you suppose to repurchase the windows .. once you buy it it is yours right?

The registration number is specific to OEM computers.....in other words, Compaq computers have their own OEM numbers, Dell their own. You can not legally transfer that OS to another system.
If you buy an OEM copy of Windows, you are supposed to buy it with a mobo or hard drive.......the OS is only supposed to be installed on THAT drive or mobo.
If you buy a retail copy of window.....you agree to install it on ONE system. Doesn't matter which system.......and if that system goes down, you can install it on another system, as long as it's removed from the first system.
That help any?

Thanks Shadow, I thought that was the case. Why else would the CD be locked? Thought I had a cheap solution to setting up a SETI cruncher. Perhaps I should try my hand at Linux:)
