hey, this looks like a great site.
I have an AMD K6-2 500MHz.
But the problem is that I cannot figure out how to get my computer to recognise the 500MHz cpu! I have set the multiplier setting to 5, since my FSB is 100MHz, but as the computer boots it only registers as about 480MHz!!!
I think this could be due to muy crappy no name, motherboard...
What can I do to start playing with settings to make it faster...
cheers

You have to remember that FSB's are not an exact science. Most of them are lower than the actual number displayed. Thats why you're only getting 480. Picking up a better motherboard would probably fix this.

If you can try increasing the FSB by a few MHZ. If you coud get 104 you would be running at 500mhz. If not i would recommend getting a new board.
Actually what i woud really recommend is getting a Socket A board and an athlon.

yeah well i am saving up for a 266MHz board, with the VIA266A chipset, and then an athlon 1.4GHz?
However, for the mean time, how do i overclock the FSB? Is it done through the BIOS or what???
Could getting an updated BIOS help my problem?
Cheers

ps - remember I'm a begginner, all i know is how to play with the jumpers......
Welcome to the forum.
In order for the pros here (not me) to help you, they need to know what your mobo is. So go ahead and find the name and post it and I'm sure someone will know what to do.

ok i've been absent for a while reading up on everthing
now, i've updated my BIOS, and it's great because now it's reading the K6-2 500MHz as exactly that, not 480MHz
my MOBO is a generic one from PCCHIPS.com
it is the super socket 7 - M577 ....
as per the beginner's guide to overclocking, i tried to go into my BIOS and find some speed seetings but can't find any. Does this mean I can only overclock using the jumpers?
I assumed yes, so in my manual, it shows how to change: dual or single voltage for CPU, DIMM voltage (3.3 or 5V), CPU core voltage ranging from 2.1V to 3.5V), CPU multiplier, and CPU frequency ( i think this may be the FSB freq) ranging from 66 to 100MHz.
Any suggestions about what i should be doing?
And an extra question: how does CPU voltage make a difference to performance?
cheers
