View Full Version : Temperature guide for XP's??
Hi, I recently set up a system with an Athlon XP 1700+, ArcticSilver II thermal compound, ThermalRight SK-6 heatsink, and a ThermalTake cpu fan.
I've also added 2 case fans to blow air from front to back.
So, my question is, is there a CPU temperature guideline chart listed somewhere for the XP's (ie, guidelines for good, mediocre, bad)?? All I could find was a tech doc on AMD's site saying the max operating temp. was 90 degrees Celsius.
Presently my CPU runs (idle) at 54 degrees Celsius with the case cover on, and 52 degrees Celsius with the case cover off.
Good?? Mediocre?? Bad??
BTW, it's on an Asus A7V266 mobo.
Thanks,
Glenn

I would think you would get lower temps with the sk-6. If you are running at default mhz and voltage i would say that was too high. try taking the case sides off again and getting a large amount of air through there.
BTW: Welcome to the forumns!
Welcome to the forums. I think that your temps are a little too high. Check to make sure your heatsink is seated correctly.
Though i've never owned an ASUS, I have read many times from those people who do and who know a thing or two that the ASUS boards read the temperature higher than it actually is. Sometimes as much as 10C higher. It seems everyone knows this but ASUS.

congrats on the new system... u say u have a thermaltake fan?? how many cfm does that push?? from my experience when i had my sk6 on my tbird 1.4 temps would be around 48c with the delta screemer and when i tested a ystech 26cfm they jumped to 56c... from what i understand copper dissipates heat alot slower then aluminum, and if your using anything slower then the delta you should have just gotten an aluminum heatsink, IMHO.. currently i'm running an athlon xp 1800+ with the sk6 and a sunon 50cfm fan and i get temps of 42 idle and 45c loaded.... perhaps you should remount the heatsink? i dropped 1c from putting as thin as a layer of as2 on the core as i could get... good luck to you.
I think you're using Asus PC Probe. Lose it and get Motherboard Monitor 5. Its more accurate.

don't bother using the ASUS probe as i'm facing the same problem. it shows the temp higher by 10*C which is alot and may even get a heart attack :) i got and external probe which i place in between the HSF and the chip. probably u'll want to do the same just to know the exect temp. mine loads at 46*C which i still consider as hot. u might want to check if u have placed the HSF right. u really don't want the chip to fry do u?
