my machine tyan thunderboard with 2 mp1800's. oc'd to 1.622 stock voltage. lot of stuff in case 450 watt ps. running fairly warm. not out of spec.
question is: if my machine is on for many hours(say, downloading a large file) it loses the video signal! it is still computing, drive is running modem is communicating. but i cant get the acpi to turn back on the monitor and have to reboot! if the acpi kicks in and i try to turn back on the video in like 3 hours it works fine. wait 9 hours and it wont come back! the only acpi function im using is video off. from windows. acpi on the mainboard is disabled.
i'm thinking the problem might be my psu, or maybe just windows.
any ideas?
otherwise, this machine works pretty darn good. except for a illeagle operation here and there. but thats just windows. at least i dont loose the gui in 2000.
thank you,

Sounds like you computer is crashing. I had the same problem, but when I lowered my OC (or got my room cooler) it stopped happening. I *did* have to turn off the video off to figure that out though. There was still a video feed, but it wasn't updating.
Some wierd things can happen when you mess with your speed. :)
I'm having a similar problem with my Tyan Tiger. I'm using 1.2 gig MP's and it's not overclocked. ACPI is disabled, but about once a week I find it running with the video dead and it doesn't wake up - apparently crashed or locked in some fashion. Everything is in spec - good power supply, plenty of cooling. I've reinstalled win2k twice and used the updates on the CD. Can't figure out what's wrong yet. I'm a bit disappointed given the reputation Tyan has for super reliable products. I'm clueless at the moment.

What type of Graphics cards have you guys got? I remember when My GF2 kept draining power from the rest of the board on my old BH6 (before mobo bit the dust).
What type of screen saver do you run? Is it one of these 3d, 32-bit colour CPU-time munchers?
Why not have the screen set to "always on" in PM, and just switch it off manually.
Just a few ideas to add to the pot...

it doesnt always do this. it just woke up now after about 12 hours. i guess i could just turn off the monitor manually. it isnt crashing as far as i can tell since it is still processing, just no video signal. must be the geforce3.
maybe i should try acpi on the motherboard instead of in windows.

How can you tell it's still processing?

i can tell its still processing because the modem is still downloading data and the file it was downloading is larger than when i left the computer. it wouldnt still be downloading data if it was locked up i think.
anyways i think i solved the problem. it seems to be my monitor! i was turning off the monitor manually and using acpi. when i manually turned it back on and wiggled the mouse the monitor doesnt always sink to ttl. so i guess i figured it out.
plus this system is pretty stable. a few glitches sometimes but it is not the type of stuff you get when you overclock a processor too far. i'm not doing that right now. im not increasing voltage or going for a huge overclock. im not even running the fsb out of spec. the few crashes i get are most likely due to the software i use not being perfectly written(including windows).

Your computer can freeze, crash, or generally fart and continue downloading. Before I changed motherboards, my computer used to crash on a daily basis. I would be downloading several hundred megabyte files and couldn't afford losing this data, so I wouldnt turn the computer off, and the computer would continue downloading the files until finished.
What happens is only certain processes crash. To me, it actually sounds like if you are getting illegal operations, this may be that you have pushed your processor too much. If you are running a server, you should be searching for the most stable system out there. I can go for days on end without crashing, as long as I don't overclock.

you guys are right. i dont seem to have the monitor problem last couple days. but, now i'm getting all kinds illeagle operations and bsods. that started with ie6 being installed. so it may be ie. or my psu may be pooping with all of the stuff i have here. even though its a antec 450. or it could be overheating. i doubt it is overclocked too far. no fsb oc. so ill have to troubleshoot this rig now.

seems to be ie 6 that doesnt agree with my machine. it crashes constantly. bringing down the os with it. other apps run fine. and monitor turns back on after it goes to sleep as long as i dont also manually turn off the monitor. so i will turn off acpi and turn off the monitor manually. this monitor is to expensive to rely on acpi to shut it down. as for ie6, it looks like its going in the recycle bin.
