I have made a domain purchase. I have this computer O/C'ing and all that jazz. But does anyone know where I go to find out about hosting my web site from my house/dsl. Is this possible for a person to do?
I am tired of paying for a web site!
I need some options here.
Well i don't think your supposed to do that on a DSL however i have anyway. That said all you need is a web server. In win2k there is one build in or you do the extreme and go with linux and use apache for a very nice server. I sure that are others but those are the only two i have used. I is definatly possible.
hope this helps,

Upload bandwidth is very important. Personally, 256 kbps isn't sufficient. I suggest 384 kbps. Depending on the "niceness" of your DSL ISP, they may not give a hoot that you're running a Web Server 24/7. Or, they may make with the "WTF d'ya think you're doin'!?" and request that you upgrade your service from them from typical home user to SOHO, or shudder Business Class. It'd be a smart move to request SOHO immediately, or at least before you complete building your own Server. It usually comes with a block of(rented) static IP's, and only costs $10 more per month--at least with my DSL ISP.
OTOH, Business Class service can break the the piggy bank. Better make that one of those 1200 lb prize porker kind of banks!
This is why third party hosting or co-location for your Web Server can be very attractive. It's APITA to do the research to weed out the bad third party hosts, but serious Gb per month restraints often come with SOHO service from your own DSL ISP. It's possible that your DSL ISP offers a "junior" type of Biz Class service that'll be just right.
Building your own Server isn't a biggie. Depending on your need for genuine(but less than "Enterprise" level, natch!) Server class hardware(Ouch) or just a nice fast box that's optimized for Server duty. If you want to get an idea of what kinda hardware goes into Intel's bottom of the line Servers, there's LOT's of info on Intel's site. And yes, you can build it for less!
They might notice your website, because you have to have dns resolution through them.

Well, will my dns address change if I leave my computer on 24/7?
Do I need to set anything up or just get Win 2000 then find out my dns and put my site through to that dns?

Web page guys,
I work for Qwest.net DSL ..you WILL need static IPs if you plan on hosting locally.. We don't care if users host locally..but we don't offer very much support for it. I could and I do on occasions support it..but it's just luck if you get someone who is technically knowledgable and in a good mood.

use apachee for windows its safer.
IIS is the gateway for things like the CODE RED worm. it only effects win2k winNT andd machines running IIS webservers
APACHEE IS THE WAY TO GO

I know now I can put up a site. But where do I go to find out how?
I just need a simple site for family stuff and to help some friends out.
Is there a web site like a how to, or setting up web servers for dummies?
Any thought?
not that i know of your best bet would be to "find" a copy of dreamweaver and just play with it. that how i learned
