K, so a little background info first. I haven't used this computer in a month or so, so I go back to boot it up. I plug in all my stuff, keyboard, mouse, monitor etc. Only difference is im using an old LCD monitor. So I boot up the computer and my Asus Motherboard screen comes on as usual, then the next screen appears, and the Windows is supposed to boot, except it doesnt.

Things I have tried: Safe mode, when I use safe mode, it begins to boot all the hardware stuff then it suddenly stops after this one hardware thing and nothing happens.

My hardware:
Windows XP Professional
Asus A8NV-Deluxe SLI
AMD X2 4400+
Corsair XMS PRO 2GB
Maxtor 200GB Hardrive
Nvidia 7800 GTX 256 MB
Enermax 535 Watt Power Supply

So my question is, whats wrong??? Could it be because my monitor is soo old that its not displaying windows correctly? It works on an old computer using an old graphics card w/ vga output. What else could be the problem? I haven't done anything new to it. BTW, nothing is overclocked. Help wld be appreciated.

BTW the last driver to load on safe mode before stopping was mup.sys

A driver is fscked up for some reason or other. Perhaps the system reigstry etc. Can be many things

well, i just got windows to load but it still doesnt show the splash screen. When it turns black after my mobo screen i have to wait a minute and press f12 in order for it to load. How can i fix this?

Well, its always a good idea to try to think back to what you were doing on the computer the last time it was working properly.

If you can get it to load up, try reinstalling the drivers for components which use 3rd party drivers (non-microsoft), or if you want try performing a system restore.

Normally the "Press F12" message at boot is related to a BIOS issue, sometimes caused by a weak or dying MB battery. I'm not familiar with that particular Asus board, but it may also be related to a BIOS setting. Enter the BIOS setup and look through all the menus for a "Load Fail-Safe Settings" or "Load Factory Default" settings option. Use one of those two settings and see if your computer still has issues.

"Resetting the BIOS" (or clearing CMOS) resets all BIOS settings to their defaults... this is done w/ the onboard CCMOS jumper. Enabling either of the two BIOS settings I mentioned in my last post does just what the settings names imply... "Load Fail-Safe Settings" or "Load Factory Defaults". So to answer your question, YES... your RAM timings will be reset to "By SPD", or what the BIOS considers to be optimal timings for the RAM installed.
