View Full Version : Best Heatsink for Athlon XP 1800????
Any recommendations for a nice heatsink that would combine maximum silence with cooling efficiency and overclocking potential.
Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks

Well that is sort of like saying I want to go really fast in my car but I also want to get 50 mpg. If you want max cooling with little noise go for a watercooling setup. If that is out of the question I would have to recommend the new Swiftech MCX462 that uses an 80mm fan which is a bit less taxing on the ears than a speedy 60mm fan. If the swifty it too pricey ($72) you could get yourself an SK6 which is just about the best at this moment with the screaming Delta or YS. You will trade some noise for good cooling though if you go with air.

performance = noise
get an alpha or swity for the best coolers with a quite 80mm fan, a alternative is a sk6 with a 60 to 80 mm adaptor with a quite fan

COOL COOLING = LOUD
(Watercooling is an exceptional)
well if i had a 1800 XP then i would definety go with a Swifty and just do the 7V mod to the delta38 (it is very quiet with compared to the default setting)
but if u want Mhz outta that chip then watacooling is the solution!

The Millennium Glaciator II produces noise very little noise when compared to the competition and its performance is awesome, the glaciator does its job through great design rather than requiring a delta fan screaming away to assist it. The glaciator is an exceptional quality hsf and one well worth buying imho

Actually, the SK6 doesn't need any 60 to 80mm adaptor. Both 25mm and 38mm tall 80mm fans can be snapped onto the SK6 easily by turning the fan diagonally and strap its 2 opposite corners down with the SK6's provided clips.
My SK6 + 80mm Delta 68cfm is giving me only 8 degrees C above ambient at full load on a Tbird 850@950 (32C CPU load @ 24C ambient). This is way better than many people's cooling with either the Swiftech MC462 or the Alpha 8045 (even if they're using the same fan as mine).
Note that the older aluminum-core sub-900MHz Tbirds run just as hot or sometimes even hotter than many higher speed (1-1.4GHz) Tbirds.

thanks i didn't know that, i suppose it is abit like the fop38 mod to fit a 80mm fan

An Alpha 8045 or Swiftech 462 with a relatively slow quiet fan is probably your best bet. Anantech has a good review.
