View Full Version : My new folder is too slow...

I got a Duron 750 on a ECS K7S5A. I am using SDRAM, because it is what I had lying around. Is it really supposed to be this slow?
My T-Bird 1.0@1.13 is blazing compared to the Duron.
Also, I don't suppose I am going to have much luck with the FSB with crappy SDRAM...
On top of everything, it doesn't like my KVM switch. It freaks out.

How slow is it? I don't personally have any comparisons between Duron's and T-Bird, but I'd imagine the difference would not be tremendous.
Keep in mind that a 1130 T-Bird is 30+ percent fast than the 750 so there should be a decent performance gap just because of pure MHz.
No help on the KVM switch, no personal experience.
You have to download the OC BIOS from www.ocworkbench.com (http://www.ocworkbench.com) in order to OC that board. I already have it downloaded, just waiting for my HSF and then OC here we come :D . The BIOS updates are listed in the ECS Forums at ocworkbench.
I'd imagine you could get up in the 800s perhaps more by OC via FSB. Before I got my 512MB of RAM for my T-Bird, I had an old crappy stick of PC100 in it was running fine at 133.

Cool, thanks. I'll admit I am a little tentative about using an unoffical O/C bios. You think it's safe? Maybe I'll go for it. I need more speed.

I have not heard of anyone having problems with that BIOS. In fact I think that Tithulta is using it and he's at 868 from a Duron 700 which points to a FSB of 124.
If we can get 124 FSB that would put us at 124 x 7.5 = 930 :D which would be killer.
Same here though, I'm not crazy about an unofficial BIOS, but I am going to go for it.
If you do updated it an OC, keep me updated on your results, I will not have my HSF until Sunday :( .

I looked at my Ram I have 128 of pc133 and 64 of pc100. Anyway, I just looked in the bios (the original bios) and realized it was set to 100/100mhz ram/cpu speed. I set the ram to 133, but couldn't change the cpu, or it wouldn't boot.
So anyway, at least I have my ram at 133 now...
I am going to get that new bios, but I am going to wait until my next WU is done.

Hey DB, just wanted you to know that I got my new folder up to 124/124.
I used the 010911 bios, and didn't have much luck until I penciled my L7's up to 1.85.
The weird thing is that it won't run at 100/133, like it did just fine before the bios flash.
(Sorry, it this is off topic, but DB and I were talking about working together on our new folders...)
Let me know when you get your HSF.
I love folding...

Cool. Good to hear it went well.
I'll have my HSF tomorrow and should have it put together mid-day.
After I get the OS installed, etc, I'll be flashing as well. You think that as high as she'll go?
Flounder43, you could use VNC if you can't get your KVM to work. here is the link: http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/winvnc.html
It is a cool program to controll computers on your network.
Fold on:D

Hey DB, Just hit 133/133!!! 1.0Ghz---Yeah!!!
Stable so far...
thanks Kenden. I need to get a network first....I am a little behind the times in that aspect...

WOW !!! Nice OC.
What are you using for a HSF ? How are the temps ?
I am thinking I should pencil the bridges before I even put it in there. I am assuming the BIOS has no voltage adjustment, right?
This would be my first pencil trick ? A bit nervous  .
I guess at least it's only a $35 CPU.

I was pretty confident with the pencil this time, only 2 bridges to connect!!! Just make sure your hand is steady, and the pencil is SHARP!
You are right, voltage needs to be done on the cpu.
Stock HSF, a coolermaster with that skinny fan...
I have the side off of my case with a little household fan blowing on it. I am going to put a better fan on the Heatsink right now. The temps went up, but still under control: 46 or so, folding.
Nice going :D
Durons are nice to OC because they don't generate anywhere near the amount of heat that the Tbirds did. Got a Duron 800@1000 with the stock HSF and no case fan at all and it's been keeping well below 50C.

ECS K7S5A's don't have multiplier or voltage control in any form - BIOS, jumpers, etc.
You have to pencil the L7's (for 1.85v) and hope that you can jump to the next step in FSB. I used this method to OC my roommate's Duron 700- just a little penciling and up it to 133 FSB and it works awesome.

Do you think there is a OC Bios for my gigabyte board? its a 7ZX,
I can change the FSB but I am still at 1.75 voltage and I'm scared to take the Heatsink of and connect the L1s cause the CAK38 is on tight!!
I think the only way to up the voltage on thta board is to do it mechanically. Two of my cpus oc'd nicely though without the voltage mod but the steppings are pretty good on both of them.

I ran my new Duron 750 @ 1000 (133x7.5) throughout the night, folding all the while. No problem with heat or stability.
My new folder is finally eating protein at a tolerable rate!!!
I also boosted my Athlon to max fsb last night. I am maxed out on all fronts- Folding made me do it!
