I'm looking to setup a RAID1 array. The question is...If I pickup a 150GB Raptor would it make any sense to put it in a RAID1 array with anything other than a second 150GB Raptor? I guess what I am getting at is will setting it up with any other 7,200rpm hard drive hurt the performance of the Raptor? :bang head

RAID1 will only be as fast as the slowest drive. Same applies for capacity. It will only be as big as the smallest drive.
If you have deep pockets and want a fast RAID1 go for it. Most everyone uses the 10k drives in RAID0 though. For the speeds of it. If this is to store files and you don't need super fast drives. Get a set of large 7200 drives and RAID them. 150gigs fills up fast.

Agree. You get the least common denominator.

What would be the best was of backing up the Raptor short of RAID1?

The easiest is if your board has built in HPA or imaging BIOS. Iuse this type. All I do is hit F9, then 10 minutes later my data is hidden and safe. It is limited waht it can do though. Then Norton has Ghost. I think Nero in some versions has imaging software.
Myself I use RAID1 for keeping the data safe. It will not prevent me from corrupting the data or losng it. Norton Ghost is the easiest if you never used backup software. Burning the data to a hard copy is the best imo. If you can invest in a external drive. That is USB. It would be a good solution also. The drive don't need to be fast just hold data reliably.
