View Full Version : what is it happening? -w2k pro
on a friend's machine the following problem happens: everytime w2k professional initialize it causes the memory "to empty" (im sorry here: just dont know the proper word for that action in english. OS is a portuguese version; hope someone can usnderstand that anyway - if this can help: theres a setting for this action where the options r kernel mode, small 64KB, full and none). that happens when its loading one of the system tray applications to the memory.
the solution i got up to now was disable Virusscan Vshield to initialize at startup.
its a pentium II 333MHz with 128MB RAM running W2k pro. its far awya from a good system for W2k but im still thankful for any help.

I'm not really sure on this one, have you got Service Pack 2 installed? Also you could try for an update of Mcafee as that seems to stop the problem if it's disabled.
Sorry that my advice is more in the way of a BUMP!

you may actually r right about service pack cuz it was not installed but i personally think thats not the problem. its a weak CPU for W2k i guess and it cant load everything together right at the startup. im wondering if the virtual memory could help me on that. is it possible? also, could that be really caused by the CPU?

I'm running W2k quite happily on P120 with 48 megs of ram. So it's not the processor or ram that's holding him back. I've also got it running easily on a P133 with 80 megs of ram. So the first box isn't a fluke.

right. actually the problem is on how much the system demands from the CPU. this case the solution was disabling virusscan vshield to intialize at startup cuz there r some other few ones also doing that (CDRW applications for ex).
after starting-up nothing happens if i try to manually load the vshield. it will do it fine.
Thats Windows 2000 performing a memory dump. What that does, is takes everything that is currently in RAM, and dumps it to a file on the HD. Its really only for people at MS to decypher though.
If this is happening, I would suspect bad RAM, or a FSB that is too high.
Windows is trying to write something to a section of RAM that is already full, or trying to get something from a section of RAM that is empty.
Doesn't Win2K Stop you if you dont have 64 megs of ram to install?

I installed it on a P120 with 48 megs, and it didn't complain at all. Installed much faster than Linux, and runs faster and more stably.

Thats odd .. I remember when my dad had a P1 166 I was going to install WIn2K but when I stuck in the bootdisks it said I was required 64 RAm.

I installed it on my p1 200mmx box that had 32 in it. It went in fine, but it ran slow as molasses in January . . .
