View Full Version : Is This Good OC'ing Memory?
Ok, so I originally didn't plan on OC'ing my system, but after hanging around you guys for a few days, I'm already pushing my Sempron 3100+ (Paris) to 2.23GHz with the FSB @ 248... stable at default voltage!
Anyway, I was wondering if this Mushkin Extreme 1GB Ram (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820146396) is good for overclocking. Since it is PC4000, I should be able to run my mobo at its full 250 FSB without a problem, right?
I know, I know, then I might be limited with my CPU, but I have heard rumors of this CPU being able to hit 2.6-2.8GHz. Not that I plan or can push it that far, but would like to take it as far as it can go with the default core voltage at least.
Besides, a little ways down the road, I plan on upgrading to an A64 chip anyway, so I would still be able to hopefully OC that chip on my mobo too with that Ram to even higher speeds.
Does all of this sound correct?
I can't believe you guys got me into OC'ing again! LOL I forgot how fun it was!!! :p
If your motherboard doesn't limit you to achieve that 250HTT(=FSB), then they should be all ok :) The PC4000 specification means it's tested by us and the memory is able to operate without problems on that speed. However, since you have S754 system you may have to disable CPC (= 2T Command Rate).

Thanks Zebbo!
That sounds great. However, since my mobo is only capable of going to a max FSB of 250MHz, I guess I really wouldn't be OC'ing the memory anyway. It would be running at its rated 500MHz.
I have seen elsewhere that this memory is able to reach a FSB of 275 and still be stable, and I have also read that there is software called ClockGen (http://www.cpuid.com/clockgen.php) out there that can get my mobo past the 250 FSB block in the BIOS. I'm not sure if I'll go that far, but...
BTW, thanks for the "CPC" tip! :)
Of course we leave some headroom for our customer to get a last bit of performance out of the product :)
You'd have disable CPC only because the hardware limitations S754 has. If you're planning to upgrade to S939 system later, the modules would work with 1T command rate without problems (assuming there's no incompatibility errors between motherboard and memory).
Thanks again Zebbo. :)
Is there anyone else out there that could give me a little feedback on this memory or any other that's good for OC'ing?
If possible, I'm looking for a single stick of 1GB PC4000, and preferably less than $130 a stick.
G.Skill, OCZ, Mushkin, etc, etc...
Anyone?
I'm thinking the OCZ Gold might be a better choice for OC'ing. Sorry Zebbo.

The OCZ Gold, Mushkin eXtreme, and G.Skill HZ use the same chips, Samsung UCCC to be exact. So they should OC just about the same.

Well I guess I'll stick with the Mushkin then. Obviously their customer support is excellent since I have already received great information from one of their techs (Zebbo) and haven't even bought the stuff yet! That pretty much seals up the deal for me. ;)
Unfortunately I have to wait about a week or so until I can buy that dual kit, which by then the rebate will probably be over. :bang head

that ram is fairly good for a 1GB module

So I hear! :p
Well, I did it!
First thing this morning I went to Newegg and bought these. Now all I have to do is wait a day to get them.
