View Full Version : IS the lastest version of firefox legit?
Usually when i download a update i download the .exe file from the mozilla website and then i double click it and it updates firefox.
but today it tells me to update THROUGH the browser and i dont download any .exe file or anything. it just loads into the browser, i restart it and thats it....
is something wierd here or im just paranoid?
I got the same thing today. The wording is off, in that it says a new version, should prolly read something like, there is a new update, blah blah. Its a security update to 1.5.0.1. Firefox by default, is set to check for updates. Tools | options | advanced | update

IIRC, Firefox 1.5 introduced an updating system that updates from within the browser itself. This appears to be their first update using this method.

Correct for the update system, but incorrect for the first update with this method. It has been in it for awhile. You should of seen a small red circle with an arrow in the top right corner (next to minimize, maximize, exit). That is a 'priority update' from what I recall. A small green circle is an extension update.

You can turn this option off.
Tools->Options->Advanced->Update

The old system would just download a whole new executable file of the new version. With the new system, the update process is done within the browser.
It stands to reason that if the new update system was introduced in ver. 1.5, the first update would be ver. 1.5.0.1. :)
yeah it's legit, if you go to the mozilla web site you can download the 1.5.0.1 executable if you want but you can just also update through the browser either will work

You would get any updates through your distro's package manager. If Firefox updated itself, I bet it would kinda tick your package manager off... :)
You can still download and install Firefox standalone (IE, not from your package manager and off of Firefox's website) but then you will have to manage it yourself.
