Now, actually. Things are transitioning over, and companies are starting to incorporate the 64 bit processors into their pre-built desktops.
You're not going to get a desktop 2600+ Barton to 2.6ghz. Mobile maybe, but not desktop.
For the money you'll spend on an Athlon XP system, you could have a much faster A64 system. Unless you're buying from a friend for close-to-nothing, the retail on A64 gear isn't any more than Socket A. Sometimes less.

PS: barton is 32bit CPU will not run 64bit..
you need 600 or 800 and up series intel CPu, or athlon 64

I mean, when appluications start becoming 64 bit...like games and programs, when they are available 64, when? and it is mobile, I'll prawly get it 400mhzfsb and 2600, guy had crappy heatsink and generic thermal at 2500mhz 333fsb with a crappy mobo, so we'll see when it gets here....(got it for $90, so I might just test to see how well it oc's, then paste results on ebay and sell it, prawly get like $160).. I Might just say screw it and get 64...but I was just curious hwne applications start to seriously be 64 bit
Far Cry, Half Life among others have a 64bit patch for them. As for improvements; not much yet. But, the big push for 64-bit applications will come with Vista, I think. It will come in both 32bit and 64bit versions, like XP. But manufacturers are working on 64bit Vista drivers now. Whereas the x64 drivers for XP aren't really mature enough right now. They are working, but not at 100%, IMO.
