Can anybody explain to me why the computer slows down when you're printing something?? I've searched all over the net already, and can't find any relavant pages. Cirtanly one of you gurus out there knows.... I'm putting it here in Software and Operating Systems cuz I'm assuming it's a Windows thing.... Like pretty much everything else :)

When you print something the file ''spools'' on your hard drive first and it requires RAM... anything using ram will slow ya down, printing - especially jpg or tiff files will slow ya down. - only fix is to get more ram! or print less.

...if you can use the EMF data format it can increase the printing speed and probably the time the system will get full available too. EMF, despite of RAW format, will take less space and increase the speed of all the process. this is found in the spool settings into your printer properties.

Yeah, I knew that. I have it set up on EMF (though have to switch to direct printing for some programs), and even while printing, I still have gobs of RAM availible. I booted the pooter yesterday, and immeditely started printing. This is JUST BEFORE I wrote this thread. Started printing, saw the garunteed slowdown, and decided to open System Monitor to check it out. Nope. No swapfile usage, and still my usual 40MB of RAM free.

I've got free RAM, and it can't take that much processor power to read the spool off the HD, so what is it?? I always assumed that the parallel port (though as fast as it is) took a lot of CPU time to manage when being used. But as I said, that's probably wong....

Any other reasons all my computers slow down so much (even takes a little longer to open the start menu) whenever I print something?

How much ram do you have ???sounds like 64 megs..If you are below 256 up it to at least that.

If you have 256,,I suggest you install an AMD processor lol just kidding.....

No, I have 192MB (big diffrence ;) )... Just got a RAM upgrade a few weeks ago. I'm trying to convince my parents to upgrade the CPU as well...

How can RAM have that much of a diffrence if it barely uses the RAM durring printing?? The system slowing down has been the case on every computer I have.... But then again, the only two other computers I've ever had were a 486 with 8MB and a P-90 with 48MB..... It's just so strange that printing would suck up computer time like it does.... Everything takes about 3-5x longer when printing then when not...

jigpu do u get the same decrease printing from any software?
have you tried updating your devices drivers (printer and stuff)?

Yes, as long as the printer is printing there is a slowdown. No, I haven't even thought of updating drivers..... Should try that!

It's SO WEIRD that I've allways had a slowdown when printing, and just out of curiosity to find out why (I assumed) it happens (to everyone), I find out that NOBODY else has the same thing going on.... WEIRD!

EDIT/UPDATE: Well, after searching HPs site, it appears that my drivers are already up to date..... Version 11.2.1....
