WD vs MAXTOR whats better?

Hi i think it is time to get a new hard drive judging by the noise and my current hard drive is 40GB .
so i am looking for a 250GB SATA II hard drive , what should i get ?

I would go with WD but thats only my personal preference I rarely see them die prematurely and I see Maxtors crap out all the time.

I'd say WD. But also I've never had a issue with Maxtor, just I havn't bought there any of there more recent drives in 3 years so it could be different.

I'd take a Western Digital over a Maxtor. The WD2500KS that you linked to is a very nice drive.

Go with WD. All my WD drives are chugging along like new. I've even got an old 2gb WD that works great. But at the moment I am trying to recover a 120 gb Maxtor that failed the SMART test.

WD = 6 of 6 still living
Maxtor = 2 of 3 dead

will the performance of the 250GB 16MB SATA II 7200 KS be a lot better over the WD 80GB 8MB SATA 7200 JD WD ??? is SATA II and 16MB cash worth it because 80GB is good for me .

You'll notice a slight gain from the 16MB cache, and no gain from SATA II. If 80GB is all you need, the WD800JD is a fine choice.

I don't think Maxtor makes a bad drive. I just think the WDs are better.

While generally not as fast, Seagate makes great drives as well. And all come with a 5yr warranty.

I run four WDs in my workstation for speed, and five Seagates in my file server for data.

i'd go for the 250GB HD myself if they are the same price. I've had Maxtors for a while (20 gig that's 4 or 5 years old, 250 gig that's over 2 years old) and i've had zero problems. i've never known anyone personally to have issues with a maxtor.

Well besides usually more space is better due to higher dencities on the disk which means faster read/write speeds.

Count me out of that raving about how great Maxtor was, I owned a Maxtor before quite a while ago. Few years back made the plunge of getting some 120's for myself and a friend, all of them except one ended up dieing. I like both Western Digital & Seagate, Seagates have never caused me a problem and seem to last.

I don't know you personally, but pretty much everyone I know personally has all had issues with Maxtors. I don't know if it's lesser quality parts or there just not built to last. Quite a shame too because speed wise they weren't garbage or anything, but after losing so many of them I said forget it.

i used to buy maxtors because they were cheaper... you get what you pay for. all 4 maxtors ive ever owned had to be RMA'ed. i got so sick of RMAing them, i traded a dead 80 gig(back in 2001) for a serial game controller if that tells you anything.

I have both Maxtor and Western Digital in my current rig.

The Maxtor has been in 3 machines. So far it has not given one issue. It is fast and reliable.

The WD drives are setup in RAID1 and I got them last Oct. So far they are operating flawless.

I believe Maxtors run a little hotter then WD. That makes them more prone to death. I have active air on all my HDs. The Maxtor is the warmest to the touch.

The longest lasting drive I have in my collection is an old noisey Seagate. It grinds, it whines. It slices and dices. One thing is does not do is die. I have had that drive as a primary in one machine for about 6 years now. I even got it used.

maxtor is crap. I have never had luck with em. Had a 10GB one from socket 7 age die in a year, a 40GB from my old duron die in 2 years. Strange though I have an old 1GB maxtor thats gotta be at leats 8 years old and she keeps chuggin along. The only reason I have have a maxtor in my current machine is because it was cheap as hell. $40 for 120GB.

I've heard it so much, but i was just putting out that i hadn't even seen it or heard it from someone i know personally. I swear almost everyone would say maxtors are crap, but from personal experiance i find them to be as good as any other HD i've used.

of course the only HD's i've had fail on me where old 2 and 4 gig one's out of ancient computers, whihc would have little to do with the quality of drives built now.

They can't be as bad as the IBM deskstars, but even then the failure rate on those was like 5%.

more than 5% as there was a class action lawsuit and everyone got money for turning in their dead one for certain model numbers. i see a lot more maxtors with errors than anything

I'll root for the underdog Hitachi. I've only owned 2 Hitachi’s though, and its only been about 6 months. Hitachi and Seagate offer better warranties over Maxtor and WD.

I haven't had a recent WD or Maxtor drive fail on me. Had a 40GB and 60GB Maxtor going for about 5-6 years and the first gen of the 8MB cache WD 120GB hds for about 4-5 years still going strong. The 2 Maxtor’s have been retired this month and the WD will be in a few weeks.

I try not to keep important data on any hd over 2 years old.

yea, seagates are very good too and offer an awesome warranty. but the wd raptors have 5 year warranties as well

comparing maxtor and western digital are like apples and oranges

i have owned about 5 maxtor drives, and all but one have either died or had to be RMAed

i have never RMAed any other hard drive brand, period.

western digital make some of the best drives - i am would go so far as to say i am a WD fanboy, because i can rely on them. On a side note - i have owned most big name hard drives. (seagate, WD, maxtor, IBM, Samsung, ect.)

Every maxtor I've had has died on me...

And up until recently I've never had a WD die on me... But then I figured out my PSU was causing the wierd power ups on my WD so It's still chugging along.
