View Full Version : $400 lappy @ BB no rebates
starting Sunday.
they're supposed to have this (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7634385&type=product&productCategoryId=cat15157&id=1134698319292) laptop for $399 without any rebates. someone on the FW forum who lives in Palm Beach, FL was able to get BB's Sunday ad which has this laptop for $399 with no rebates.
others on the FW forum have been reporting the price will be $450 which is still a pretty decent deal. the website is going to show the laptop OOS, but there's a way around that. you simply choose the protection plan link and then click the check out button. that will add the laptop to your cart for which you should be able to choose the in-store pickup at your local location. after the laptop's been added to your cart, you simply remove the $129 protection plan and proceed w/ the checkout process. you'll then wait until Sunday to pick the laptop up when it does go on sale.

im sorry but best buy should be known for this by now. I cant even express in words the amount of times ive seen a laptop from them and gone to get it or order it and they dont have it.
I took one last ditch effort about a month ago i went and got a sunday paper at 5 am right off the truck. This was not listed on the website or the online website ad. I was at best buy 30 minutes after the door was open and it was already sold out. This is not black friday.
It a huge bait scam. They advertise laptops when they have like 3 of them and the people who work there are prob ones who even end up getting them. I have a friend who works there who says that is not allowed but i dont believe him.
Its bs they can advertise items that they have such low stock on. Even ones that say ohh 15 min per store you get there when it opens and still sold out.
Sorry for the rant but these advertisements are the biggest joke ever. its to get people to go there

My store has 20+, i saw them with my own eyes considering i work there. Every store got new shipments of them. The laptops you were probably looking for are laptops that have been stocked and displayed for a while and the store didn't save any for the upcoming ad.
anyone in WV confirm this?

if you in la, ca area. the bb-hawthorne store has 4 of these, problem is they jacked up the price back to 449.99. some stores did have them for $399.99 like the city of industry bb.
449.99 is still a deal but i'll have to pass, d94 if you find another lappy deal please post it :)
its to get people to go there
No duh.
And once there you will be hit from every direction with 'service' offers. The actual sale of the laptop results in little or no profit, the addition of peripherals and services (Geek Squad setups and in-home services, high speed internet) is where they make the real money. Best Buy has every reason to have as many of these on the shelf as possible, because without the product they won't make money on those add-ons.
The actual numbers are something like 1-10% profit from the 'box' (meaning the PC or laptop). Then with cables, printer, wireless router, and geek squad coming to your home to set all this up, you raise the total value of the 'cart' (the entire sale) so that the end profit on that 1-10% laptop becomes 30+%. This isn't a trade secret, it's how all the retailers are making money since electronics prices started to drop so dramatically years ago. $25 for a $2 usb cable? lol
I'm not the biggest fan of upselling, but Best Buy is making a decent living at it. And FWIW, buying the service plan is probably the best move you can make with laptops. Anyone know how much it costs to replace an LCD out of manurfacturer's warranty? Plenty, and I'm a geek and wouldn't want to do it myself.
My Toshiba laptop has the 3 year accidental damage warranty. I hardly ever use the laptop anymore, but I've seen too many people in tears because they realize that for $200-300 they could have had this (and possibly other hardware issues) fixed under a service plan they didn't buy... I was a fool not to get it.
Now, other plans and replacement warranties on $50 -mp3 players and such are pretty useless. My rule of thumb is $500 or greater needs to be spent on the item before I consider buying any sort of extended/extra warranty. Even my cell phone has the full insurance coverage which I pay a pretty penny for each month. The one time I need it and it's not there I will be kicking myself pretty hard.

And that is the point of Insurance and Warranties. You are betting something bad will happen and BB (or whoever) is betting nothing bad will happen. Think of it as financing a possible repair or replacement at the time of purchase........

With laptops in particular, hard drive replacements and lcd backlights fail too often NOT to buy the service/accidental damage coverage. Add (1) replacement battery (over the course of the service plan), hard drive replacement, and lcd backlight together and you've already made your initial service plan investment two-fold. Maybe three-fold.
Main reason years 2 and 3 are so valuable is that's typically when these components die, NOT in the first year/under manufacturer's warranty.
