Is AS5 on GPU ok?

I've read a couple posts in other forums saying that using AS5 on a GPU wasn't recommended because of the silver. I find that hard to believe, but before I install an NV Silencer on a 7800GTX I wan't to make sure... Any feedback on this?

Iv used AS5 on my 7800GTX and both my 6800GT's, works great and really reduces the temp of the card, even with stock cooler.

The problem with AS5 and GPU's is that it is capacitive. Yers, many people have used it without a problem, but you must be careful not to get any on any other connections or you could have a big problem. Creamique is the preferable TIM for GPU's as it's safer.

Yeah you have a possibility of frying your gpu if you apply it wrong and it leaks over the sides of the chip.

Everyone is basically correct so far. I use AS5 on the GPU and RAM. It works good, be careful with it.

I spread it on mine, and on the RAM chips as well. Due to the poor finish of the ATI silencer, it required a relatively thick layer, more so on the RAM chips. If you make a mistake, that's fine, clean it up and do it again till you get it right. You won't cause any damage unless you try to use the card with AS5 on the traces, and even then you might be okay with taking it apart and cleaning it, depending on where it ended up at.

I used AS5 on my 9800pro before I knew any better. I spread it very thin with a credit card.

i've been using as5 on most of my modified videocards since i don't have any ceramique. No problems yet.

ok sounds good - I'll spread it very thin all over the GPU making sure the stuff doesn't go over the sides. I lapped that silencer's HS too, it looked really poorly finished.

yea i use a razor blade to spead AS on CPUs and GPUs, it's basically too thin to be able to run out the sides

You may encounter problems if you get AS5 on any of the little surface-mount components near the GPU, but in that case you're applying way too much ;) Its a lot easier to get AS5 on traces when spreading on the memory, so be careful if you decide to use it there.

Haha, same here. I've put AS5 on my video card's RAM and GPU. A lot of people say you need to be careful, for good reason. I figure I'm careful enough. :) Just make sure the amount of AS5 on the RAM/GPU surface is barely enough to cover it all. You don't want it slopping everywhere.
