Hi, where can I find a description of what's written on the die for the different models of XP cpu??

I have a sneaking suspicion that the OEM chip I was sold as a 1700+ is actually a lower model - my Asus mobo lets me choose between 1.1 GHz and 1.46 GHz from the BIOS - choosing the lower speed lets my cpu idle temp run in the mid-40's Celsius, whereas the higher speed idles in the mid-50's celsius.

Unfortunetally I can't tell you what's written on mine right now - it's under a heatsink under a layer of Arctic Silver II. But I was going to re-do that anyway in the next day or so ;)

Thanks,
Glenn

On the die it will give (list) the speed ! Example being : my retail 1700+ shows "AX1700MT3C" as the first (TOP) listed number (out of the 3 ) on the die . :) ********* C:\My Documents\My Pictures\CPU.jpg **********************( THIS IS A PICTURE OF XP1500+)

You have to upload the picture first. I think that there's pic hosting here, but I don't know where it is. You can use auctionwatch.com if you can't find anywhere else.

Don't get to concerened, your MB isnt sure if the chip you have is a 100 FSB or a 133 FSB chip, 11x100=1100, 11x133=1.46, 1.46 is the default setting of a box stock 1700+...so no, you didnt get ripped off, the first line should contain 1700 when you actually get to look at it...as for the temps, the athlon family all runs pretty warm, what heatsink are you using, 50C is awful high, i built a 1500+ for my roommate and it idles around 36C
