Is it a good idea to pay extra for the sli motherboard? is sli going to be a priority in the future of gaming?

Well, that's going to depend on who you speak to. I think it's a big waste of money. Video cards cost quite enough without buying two, and one good one supplies you with all the graphics you need. This is not to mention the extra cost for the board, a more powerful PSU and a bigger electric bill.

then i would say yes for SLI as it has the added bonus off adding a secong GFX card when it's needed.

You might as well by the board they are not much more expensive and you are not forced to buy two cards.

Can 1 card get you great performance? Yes it can. Is SLI a neccessary thing? No it is not. But the last time I looked this whole site was for enthusiests (sp?) and about high-end hardware. 2 high-end cards in SLI definately qualify in that respect.

I have always wondered why people that say SLI is a total waste of money don't say the same about watercooling. A good water system will cost close to the same as a second 7800. But you can get almost the same performance with a high-end air cooling solution for a fraction of the cost. But noboby says watercooling is a total waste. I look at them the same. And besides it's your system, do what you want.

Water cooling is a whole different animal. For one, it gets you a much quieter rig which for some people is well worth it. Secondly, you can use the same WC on another system. With SLI you are paying double for performance you don't really need. Then a year later a new single card comes out that out performs your two cards, so what have you gained? Lastly, not all games respond that well to SLI systems and run just as well with a single card. Naturally, it's his rig and his choice, but he did ask what people thought. Being an enthusiast does not necessarily mean buying every new gimmick that the PC industry dreams up.

agree agree agree oh and agree lol

i think sli is only worth it if you can justify the price ...and 2 cards mean you loose more money lol ....not a very good investment lol ...if not a 7800 oveclocked fantastic :)

either way tell us what you decided and what youre getting :) :p

Well, Spiritedandy, all this agreement makes me think I must be wrong.:D
Seriously, since you have I very high end SLI set up and think it is overkill that says a lot more than anything I can say. I do know that I just picked up an NF4 board and considered SLI as a just in case option, and then ruled it out as foolish.
