View Full Version : OMG 3.8 ghz for 2 hours then died
Hey guys I just put a rig together yesterday i got one of the sl78z NORTHWOOD 3.0 intel retail boxes and put it on my IC7_g, x800xl video, 2x256 or 2x 1gb, maxtor 80gb, sblive.
It ran fine and cool at stock and 3.6 took it up to 3.8 slowly
30mhz at a time running super pi and 3dmark benchmark for every step to monitor temps and voltages everything was fine even loaded up bf2 after swaping in my 2X 1gig sticks.
then was winding down for the night and loaded up nero to burn a cd and it blue screened out of the blue and now its not restarting ... no post
the temps were high 40s and low 50s had cool air ducted to the cpu
volts 1.55 to 1.575

any suggestions on a solution post or pm
THANKS, J

Well, if it won't even post now and you've rechecked everything either the board or CPU are dead. Do the fans come on, or is there any indicator lights or error beeps when you try to boot up? :bang head
no beeps and fans do spin up power light on mobo lights up.
you might be a victim of
SNDS (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=115166)
if it indeed was a Northwood. :eh?:

Either SNDS or a mosfet failed. Check the board to see if there are any blown mosfets.

Have you tried a different power supply? Know any buddies with an 478 intel setup you can barrow their cpu/mobo for a couple hours to see if its one or the other?

Not if you Overclocked it. This has been discussed many times. You break it, you buy it.
Have you tried a different PSU?

That seems a little high for a northwood too. The Prerscotts clocked higher on average. My 3.4 northy wouldn't do above 3.6, and even then the temps were much too high to justify the increase.
Most people don't realize that a Northwood at high clock DOES suck some serious power...almost as much as the Pressys do at higher clocks. It is very likely that the PWM on the motherboard failed you, or even the power supply (forgot to look which one it was). This isn't a clear cut case of a bad cpu. Unless you have another to test you may be replacing a good chip. Go through the steps. Get ahold of another cpu and PS (even on loan) and try replacing one part at a time. Heck...it could even be the memory.
thank you for your post about the mobo and power supply
i'm gonna swap stuff around at a friends house this afternoon
swapped the stuff i don have and nogo so i called up my friends none havs a socket 478 box andmore most are 939 amd now
Got my RMA'd mobo back on friday guys.....
it won't oc well i'm only running 3.6 now but i think its because i added some more ram.
