You really think that you can sell for $400+ on ebay?
Yeah man, many of the auctions end at $400+.
I ended up ordering one. :) I'm considering testing it out, and seeing how it performs compared to my Opteron165. If the Opteron170 is able to go farther, I may keep it and sell off the Opteron165.
I'm already pretty happy with my Opteron165, so we'll see.

Ebay will take $10-15 from you, and paypal will take $15... don't forget that it'll cost you about $30 in total for that, and then shipping+insurance... total transaction will cost you $40 in the end, so in order to make money, the auction would have to sell for $406+ to make anything at all. If it sells for $405, you lost $1...

Not to mention, the time you will spend creating the auction - it's almost not worth it, man. To test the chip and then break even, on the other hand, that's a different story.

You won't make money buying this and selling on ebay if you ask me... and the LITTLE bit you may make is almost not worth the investment of $356, and the time.

How do these compare to the Intel chips in the same price range? I don't want to start a debate in this section at all. I'm just curious before I buy this one as I haven’t kept up on the new chips or anything.

The last time I checked, which was a white back, these were tops in this price category. Anything changed?

Went home for lunch to see that my FedEx ground shipment from Sunday already arrived!!! Man, I put in my order Sunday night for the cheapest ship, it goes out the next day (Monday - 2 days ago), and it was sent as 2day FedEx. Then, I go home @ 12:30pm to see that someone from home already signed it.

As for homer77's question, I guess I'll take the 2860Mhz one because it is faster by 160Mhz. That probably out perform the 1MB L2 cache's advantage?
Congrats on that OC. I can only get my X2 3800+ to 2770Mhz.

Well guys I got my Opteron170 today. I had to drive down to the FedEx building since they won't drop the package off, unless I'm present.

Initial results when compared to my Opteron165 are somewhat dissapointing. I booted it at 2.8GHz with 1.45v, which was about 2-3 hours stable in Prime95 on the Opteron165. This Opteron170 wouldn't even boot into Windows at that setting. So I bumped voltage up to 1.6v. It's Windows stable, but maybe 5 minutes Prime95 stable. :(
High probability I'll be selling this off on Ebay, unless burn-in does wonders for it.

I've got the same one... I may not even gonna test it if it's that bad. Well, it's not BAD, but just not as good as my current 170.

I have to wait for a new vid card til I can test mine anyways... keep us updated plz! :)

What material is it?

Anyway, it maxed out at 2.66Ghz. Dual prime stable.
Cooled with Scythe Ninja.
Unlidding didn't add to the OC but the temp dropped by maybe 5C (at dual prime95 load) or so.

I hope burning in will help the oc. But I checked 3dMark's CPU score. Good that it is higher than my X2 3800+ at 2.77Ghz by a little more than 100 CPUmark. :-)

I still don't know if I'm gonna sell it and not test... cuz I know that the same stepping/week doesn't ALWAYS mean the same OC. Sometimes it's just luck...

I'm gonna see what else turns up about this week/stepping. If a single person can break 2.8ghz, then I'll spend time on it... if 10 people say it's not breaking 2.7ghz, then I won't test.

I'm not gonna wait long, though... as my replacement video card may be in sometime this week.

one of the reason why i decided to cancel is because i have a good x2. i was about to get 2860 with about 1.47v, and breaking 2.9ghz shouldn't be that hard with lil tweaking. if i upgrade to 170, that means it'll need to hit at least 2.7ghz to be comparable to my x2 and its also $70 more expensive than my x2.

Look at it this way... everything that I buy, I end up reselling for a marginal loss, which really is the price of renting the parts anyways...

Think about it... I pay $356 for this, and turn around and let's say I sell it for $340 next week...

$4 on shipping it to the person makes it a total of $360 that I spent on the chip.

$360-$340 = $20 to rent the chip for one week. :D

Just wanted to say that I noticed temps are extremely low with this Opteron170. It runs as cool as my old Athlon 3000+ Venice (Say 30*C Idle). Good IHS right thur.

Primed at 2.6 for 8 hrs on 1.425v so I'll turn it up a little more and see what happens. This thing runs really hot though 51C I'll reseat it once I get my ram back from rma. I think I put too much tim.

Drop in the middle should do it with any chip. If your heatsink isn't gonna touch the outer corners of the IHS, then it doesn't if there's a TIM on it on the corners anyways... that's why you dab it in the middle, and let it spread to as much of a contact as you have.

I don't really see how too much tim can really affect performance anyways b/c the pressure from the heatsink squeezes out all excess. Now if you put a WHOLE lot, then that's just ridiculous :) (of course, I'm being sarcastic and don't think you did that) :D

Na it wasn't excessive. Maybe just a little more than usual. I would have cleaned it and reapplied it but I wanted to fire it up already :D I'm hoping once it settles in I can get to 49 cause I hate seeing the big 50, prime usually gets me like 3-4C higher than anything I do anyways so this is worst case.

Man I can't decide between this Opeteron 170 @ 2.7 or keeping my 146 which is at 2.95. I know for gaming I should stick with the 146 but I just keep hoping that games and software with have support for dual cores to justify having a dual core. Decisions, decisions.

Well from my understanding this is basically how to look at it. Basically because the game will only run on 1 of the processors cores. Therefor the 170 clocked to 2.7 Ghz will be slower then my 146 @ 2.9 Ghz. However if the game is written for a dual core processor then the 170 would blow my 146 out of the water. I don't believe that there are any current games that would see a benefit from a dual core at the moment. However, please correct me if I am mistaken.

On a side note I think I am going to hold off upgrading till Vista, Directx 10, AM2, and 65nm Dual Cores come onto the scene. Now if that could all happen about a year from now, and all at the same time, then that would save me alot of time and money.

IWH, what kind of temps are you getting at 1.6v? I'm at 1.425 and already at 51C. If I put this to 1.6 it'll probably explode :eek: Too bad I don't have the n*ts to remove the IHS. I'm hoping this passes 24hrs 2.7 cause I don't think I can go much higher on the vcore.

Temps are extremely good on this Opteron170. Load temps at 1.6v are about 40*C.
Still though...it OCes just as well as my Opteron165 at 1.45v (Which runs a lot hotter, around 45*C load...bad IHS).

Keep in mind that even though there are no dual thread games out right now a dual core processor still has an advantage. Unless you game on a clean XP install with only the game installed there are other things running that the other core can take care of. Firewall, antivirus, Software RAID, some onboard Audio, etc, all of these require some CPU cycles.......
