Don't know where to put this, but I'll start here. Asus p2b-f, 566cel@950. 512megs133 ram. System stable for 6 months. Then I get "Error at line A20". Says it can't find himem.sys. It IS there. I'm looking for someplace to start. Have I pushed the system? HD problems? Yes my pci bus is high, but I have been stable. Temps are never past 38C (CPU) 31C (MB) under load. This is new 133 ram Haven't dug into what it is. I can get system going by manually loading (F8), sometimes it just does. I re-installed win98SE. Ran a complete virus scan Norton. Any ideas. I will keep checking things.
Did it happen after a reboot? If so what did you install before the reboot.. See if you can get into Safe Mode and take the files from your floppy win98 startup disk and then paste it whereever.
"A20" seems to be familiar to me... And I think it is related to Himem.sys (either that or EMM386.sys). Time to dig out my DOS 6 manual.... Or find that site that is an online version of the DOS 6 help program....
In the words of all good programs...
Please Wait...
Here are all the "relavant" links I have found.... No sites have exactly the error you have, so here are a few close matches...
UPDATE #1: Found this (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q96/7/11.asp) page. Says if it reports "Unable to controll A20 Line". Not quite what you described.... Still looking...
UPDATE #2: Found this (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q89/6/99.asp) page. Says if it reports "Can't enable A20" or "A20 Line already enabled".... Still looking....
UPDATE #3: I THINK I FOUND THE ANSWER!!!!!!
Go HERE!! (http://service2.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nsw.nsf/docid/1998091615025007). It looks to be what you're suffering from...

JigPu, thanks for the time. I can't seem to pick up your links. The actual wording IS "Unable to control A20 line." I'm a-workin' on it, son. Yodums, I know a reformat may be on the horizon. I have been playing with some beta's. CPU-MB monitoring app's. One thing, for the last 2-3 weeks I have had a hard time shutting down. I know, old problem. I used a patch from MS and it seemed to work. Then, not. I now have MBM working and I installed the "SHDN." When I have trouble shutting down , I have used that to get out. Tonight I noticed that it took longer to defrag than usual. Are there clues in my tale of woe? Again, thanks for getting back.

Well, as to the clues you listed, I'm lost.... But I'm like that on most things ^_^;; My guess is that when you get your system back up, you should backup what you want to keep, and re-install Windows. That should clear most problems up.
Since you couldn't get my other link to work, try this link instead....

If this dosen't work, I'll just copy and paste the instructions to the page....

Error: "HIMEM.SYS is missing..." or "Unable to control A20 line..." after installing Norton SystemWorks
Situation:
After installing Norton SystemWorks and restarting the computer, you see one or both of the following error messages:
- HIMEM.SYS is missing. Make sure that the file is in your Windows directory.
- Unable to control A20 line. XMS driver is not installed.
Solution:
To solve the problem:
1. Restart the computer in Safe mode Command Prompt Only:
1. Click Start, and then click Shut Down. The Shut Down Windows dialog box appears.
2. Click Restart, and then click Yes. Windows will shut down and the computer will restart.
For Windows 95: When Starting Windows 95... appears on the screen, then press F8. The Windows 95 Startup Menu appears.
For Windows 98: As the computer restarts, press and hold down the Ctrl key until the Windows 98 Startup Menu appears.
3. Select Safe mode Command Prompt Only, and then press Enter. Windows will display a DOS prompt.
NOTE: In Safe mode, Windows uses default settings: VGA monitor, no network, Microsoft mouse driver, and the minimum device drivers required to start Windows. You will not have access to CD-ROM drives, printers, or other devices.
2. Type edit autoexec.bat to open the Autoexec.bat file in the DOS Edit program.
3. Type set dos16m=2 as the very first line in the file.
4. Press Alt+F to open the file menu, and then press S to save the file.
5. Press Alt+F to open the file menu, and then press X to exit the editor.
Restart the computer to see whether the problem is solved. If not, then continue with these steps.
2. Type edit config.sys to open the Config.sys file in the DOS Edit program.
3. The Config.sys file should include the line as it appears below. You may need to append a Space and /M:1 only or add the entire line.
device=c:\windows\himem.sys /m:1
4. Press Alt+F to open the file menu, and then press S to save the file.
5. Press Alt+F to open the file menu, and then press X to exit the editor.
NOTE:
If Windows is installed to a different folder, then substitute the appropriate folder name.
The value for the /M: line can range from 1 to 17 1 works for most computers. IBM PS/2 and Compaq Prolinea computers may require a value of 2.

Got it guys. I got to symantec and took it from there. Followed the procedure that Shadowr listed. Now I plan on letting this whole thing work in the back of my head and get it straight in my mind WHY this happened. Friend told me one time if you can see why something works OR DOESN"T, it can help when you're up against a similar situation. But now, sat. am breakfast with the wife. Thanks to all!
