Here is another team suggestion/thought. I have seen where other teams compile lists of odds and ends hardware and see if someone has something someone else could use and vice-versa. Either selling or swaping or just plain giving.

Now I know that you can't sell/trade/barter on these boards and that there is an issue with honesty/truthefullness but is anyone interested in having a list on the team website or something?

Also, another idea that I saw develope over at Ars I think is that they coordinated a lot of old/unused hardware and sent it to a member to build and run as a dedicated team farm (time and electricity). Actually, I think some of them actually bought certain items to contribute etc. but it would not have to involve spending new money. Any thoughts on this at all?

I'll just keep lobbing ideas about the team in here until someone politely asks me to shut up. ;)

Well I have a lot of extra pieces of stuff lying around, mainly a few sticks of ram, hard drives, mountains of assorted fans, half a dozen power supplies - you get the idea. I've got a server that I'm trying to sell at the moment, but it's not going too well on Ebay. Looks like I might be better off tearing it down and selling individual parts. It's a quad pentium pro with 2gigs of ram. Those parts might help somebody, but I can't give them away. I guess it would be a good idea, but obviously we can't sell stuff here unless it's in the classifieds.

Sounds good to me! BTW TC how does that quad PPro do seti? I also wanted one of those chips, but now my eyes are set on building a xeon. Funny how that works, I always want to build the machine I can't afford.

Yeah, what I have seen is that members will alert their teammates to something they need/want to sell before they "open" it up to the rest of the board they are on or try ebay etc. While there are cases of giving things to other people usually what you have is trading one thing for another and selling (sometimes at reduced price) between team members.

Again, just an idea. :)

The pro with large full speed cache was essentially the beginning of the xeon. The 200 with 256K cache does units in about 21 hours. I had some pass through my hands with 1MB cache, but I never got a chance to test them because the socket 8 board I have would not recognize the cache size. I bet a pro with 1MB cache would cut the time down to maybe 19 or 20 hours - really not bad for something that old running at only 200MHz.

Honestly I would not bother with a xeon. The 1GHz xeon with only 256K cache is about as fast as a 600-700MHz xeon with 1MB cache. Since a 1GHz xeon with 256K cache is practically the same as a 1GHz P3 with 256K cache, it doesn't make much sense from a price stand point. Of course the new "xeons" are little more than P4's with SMP enabled. Not much point with those either until they have "northwood" xeons at higher speeds - of course they will always charge a premium for the SMP capability being enabled.

Got more than a few bits and pieces myself, nothing really worth selling. Small HD's, ideal for an OS and SETI but little use for anything else. Have a few sticks of PC66 RAM, a P100+Mobo and case, Pentium2 350+Mobo and case.
I don't really have the time to setup these as dedicated crunchers, nor do I really want to spend the money in getting the bits to get them running. My priorities lie with work at the moment.
Anyone here in the UK looking for some parts? My only stipulation is that they aren't sold on and are used for SETI.
