View Full Version : Call Of Duty 2 Is A Little Bit TOO Detailed

You would expect me to like playing with all the details on in cod2 because I spent so much money on a video card. Inside the menus you can select DX7 or DX9, but DX9, other than killing your framerate, adds A TON of crap that you definately don't want if you're trying to win such as snow that makes it hard to see enemies and A LOT of smoke that seems to just float out of the ground. With DX7 instead of DX9 enabled, all of this goes away and it's SO much easier to play and it's easier on your eyes. I can actually see across the map now! COD2 just seems a bit too much detailed. I don't know how I feel about games trying to become more realistic. I doubt that games will ever become "lifelike", but if they keep trying to make it like this; all the reason more to use a modded .cfg. I can't even explain how many more kills I get now. I was a bit hesitant to stoop this low....I mean; this video card was so expensive, and I'm not taking full advantage of it. But I have around 160 FPS with EVERYTHING on the highest except for DX9. The game still looks amazing though. I would put cod2 w/ dx7 and everything on high a step ahead of CSS with everything on high and using dx9.
Also, is there anisoptric filtering in COD2? All I see is anti-aliasing.
That was so much longer than I wanted it to be....

Too much detail? You can never have too much detail :)
Game is fun, played it, beat it, deleted it - moving on.

I agree with you, even though i cant run it in Dx9 but a buddy of mine has a 7800GT and i put his to Dx7 and he likes it alot more, he said about everything that you have. :)
wow i agree with M Powered how can you have to much detail the more detail the more it will look real
I run it with dx9 and accept the handicap that comes with it. Otherwise I would feel like my vid card was being wasted. I guess I'd prefer the dx7 people were similarly handicapped (there has to be a way to limit visibility without a huge performance hit). Maybe this will come with a future patch.
Since I only play multiplayer, I would otherwise miss out on all the eye candy in today's games. I'm glad cod2 puts it into the mp (even if it still isn't as good as single player.)
In multiplayer, dx7 all the way. High details though and no AA or AF.
In singlke player i will turn on all the details and enjoy it :D

i play dx7 online and dx9 normal story i love that detail:P
1 thing i do hate is that is so linear

this is what I do in FEAR multi most the time
Remember that not everyone 'plays it to win'. I played that game for fun, and it was more fun with the detail up high because it was more immersive.

Im not sure what ur complaining for, i run this game at 1280x1024 with 4AA @ DX9 with a minimum of 45fps and an avarage of 76fps, ive even seen it in the 300s at times.

Leave the detail On...
What I really want is a Patch to be released to reduce the amount of people that seem to get enjoyment out of using bloody cheats :bang head

in DX9 i find things too shiny, but i fixed that by putting lighting to low ;) however recently i've been playing MP in DX7. in DX9 @ 50 fps it seems choppy (not smooth) ? but in DX7, 50 fps is SMOOOTH ! in DX7 i never see below 75 fps @ 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF, vsynced and TB forced. hope the patch smooths DX9 out ! not that i get bad fps, i get a min of 40-45 fps @ 1024x768, BUT it's not smooth. seems more like the way it would be at 30 fps. go figure ..
Wait...so your saying, DX7 looks more detailed than DX9? SO use DX7 over DX9? Err...the only reason I could see to use DX7 is to increase your FPS or remove smoke or draw distance, that sorta thing, gives you an advantage over other players. I don't think single player was too detailed, it isn't detailed enough IMO, limited by current hardware. Multiplayer is nice with DX9 as well, my FPS are perfectly fine with max settings, 1280x1024, 4xfsaa/8xaf.
I can understand why you'd use DX7 even if you have an uber powerful DX9 card. That nice unfair advantage to where, for example, if you have a heavily florished map and knowing how DX7 makes your draw distance basicly 3ft in front of you, pretty friggin lame IMO...just makes me angry </rant>

I sometimes get bad framerates using DX9 @ 1680x1050, but I choose to accept the handicap (even in multiplayer) because it looks so awesome! So what if my K/D suffers slightly? I love the immersive experience provided by all the details.
On a related note, while I enjoy COD2 multiplayer, I don't believe much separates the truly skilled from the average players. This is in contrast to Wolfenstein: ET, which is my favorite MP game. In that game, an average player has very little chance of killing a skilled player, even when taken by surprise. In COD2, the gameplay is more chaotic and the weapons are such that anyone can kill anyone quite easily. Therefore, framerate isn't nearly as important as it is in Wolf: ET.

So you turn off the eye-candy just to get a competitive advantage? You really need that to win? Why not just play the original CoD or something older if you simply wish to win? :eh?:

I would agree with playing with lower settings in multiplayer because that is kind-of competition-like and getting the edge of having better fps can save you sometimes, and then playing with everything as high as you can for single player.

Never tried the DX7 trick in multiplayer, but I can usually do pretty well without it.
do you think in wwII the soldiers were like
"damn turn this down to dx7 so i can see through this smoke grenade"
???

I don't think there is to much detail I think the smoke is great, I do think that the ability to gain an advantage by turning down your graphics is kind of lame though

Well, I tried it not too long ago and its unreal how much different it is. On some maps, I can see how there would be no problems, but with smokey/snow/sand maps (especially Russian), a huge advantage can be gained.
I'd say since the advantage is so big, if they (ever) start using some Anti-Cheat program like Punkbuster, I betcha you won't be allowed to use DX7 because of the advantages.
punkbuster has nothing to do with the in-game video settings, it wouldn't affect that.

Yes it would. I play Enemy Territory and it restrict certain video settings (disable fog...certain overbright bit crap....and a few other things).
Punkbuster does the same thing with BF2...doesn't allow disabling fog...and prolly other stuff like that.

I wasn't trying to make this a complaint. I was just saying that there's simply too much crap going on with DX9 that makes it hard for you to see. DX7 is fine for me, jesus y'all get so emotional over stuff you read... Most people here don't play competitively (TWL doesn't count), so you think this is in a way a "hack". But I can assure you that pretty much anyone that plays past the TWL level does not have ANYTHING enabled that could cause them to start out at a disadvantage.
Ziggo0: How could you say that this is an unfair advantage? You make no sense at all. Unfair = non-legal.
I'm not going to reply anymore to this thread, you guys and girls get WAY out of hand... Keep posting though, I like to see what y'all say in computer science :p
I can also gaurentee you that DX7 will be allowed no matter what patch/punkbuster/update comes out.

I dont see anyone getting out of hand, just people stating their opinions, whatever they may be.
I don't see this as a hack, I see this as a option which allows older hardware to play the game, which also gives an edge to people in multiplayer. Either use it or dont.
When I used to play UT2k3 and 2k4, I played to win. 1024x768 (game me the best mouse movement), lowest details possible, no fancy effects except for a lighting feature which highlighted the ball in bombing run. Multiplayer is all about the competition, less effects means better vision and faster performance.
Singleplayer games I play as high detail and resolution as I can. I play singleplayer for the experience of the game and multiplayer for the competition. Both are fun, but they serve different purposes.

Where the hell is this DX7 or DX9 setting.... Give me a sign, a map, a GPS.........

"damn turn this down to dx7 so i can see through this smoke grenade"
:D This whole thread reminds me of a time while playing instagib in UT2K4. I was hiding behind the fire on this custom map and kept getting shot. Of course I screamed, "HACK!!"
"What are you talking about man?"
"How can you see me behind the fire all the time?"
"...what fire?"
Come to find out he had coronas turned off, lol!

So THAT's what coronas are...LOL, I couldn't figure it out, and just never asked.

I say it's an unfair advantage when you got like a 7800GTX or x1900XTX and your playing DX7 just to remove that smoke grenades effect or make textures lower res so their more plain. I'm not bitching I Just think its lame. The game was meant to be played in DX9 but people go to DX7 just to get the...competitive advantage. Whats funny is, in CSS (DX9), DoDS (DX9) And this game IN DX9, I have zero trouble at all. Played to much last night and I can see where the removal of the smoke would definitly be the advantage but I peg people through smokes easily. Its just a matter of using skill of sound & sight to place a good pot shot or hell, throw a nade. In CSS // DoDS, flash grenades & shell shock, DX7 pretty much eliminates those but they aren't that big of a deal. I'm just one of those people who are an eye candy freak....<3 teh eye candy

I respect your opinion, but you say that it is unfair. It's not unfair at all... And I would LOVE to play you and watch you try to aim at me by sound while I just sit there in the middle of the smoke with my iron sights on your head. gg.

Just FYI, this effect doesnt eliminate the effects of smoke grenades, it just removes the smoke/snow/sand effects from the corusponding maps.

I think you guys are taking this game far too seriously.
Its funny people say, "Its skill." LOL I don't know why but I get a good laugh everytime someone says that. :p
I remember skill used to be associated with hitting people in the air with the railgun in quake2. Or how you can shoot a rocket through a corridor and with luck have someone walk through and have the rocket kill him.
But skill by using "Sight and sound." Please...
Its only a video game.
