just to let you know... this is F@H friendly. I haven't seen a hit yet on F@H.

And i sure would like a few of my fellow folders to join up (even if it is one compy just for testing)..... and help get www.OCForums.com (the team name) moved up from the mid 700's on the team list...

Frank,

What is the purpose of this simulation and measurement of the internet?

What benefit(s) might be expected from a fuller mapping of cyberspace?

The last time I put a free israeli utility (downloader) on one of my boxes, I found out it was spying on my internet downloads and websites visited, for and reporting it to some marketing firm.

This is an attempt to get a physical map of the internet and it's connections. It also is an attempt, i believe, to get a real-time map of all connections.

The only reason I joined is i can't stand seeing ArsTechnica in #1. LOL

I am not sure it is good to know every possible critical node and junction within the internet. besides the program uses up to 20% of my cycles I really want for folding.
I will check it out, but....

20%? ON my compy, it uses less than 10%....

I really like Franks idea of Team Spirit.

but I don't like the idea of having someone knoow the exact locations of junctions & such.

Would be a great Terrorist tool. -or hacker...... or both. :-/

I'm not joking either. I deal with stuff every day.

There are a "few" LEA programs that can do this already.

If it were a, 100% non-potential threat, I'd do it.

but it's not, & if they knew what they were doing, they wouldn't ask us to help.

Call me paranoid, but I see this as a potential hacker/ terrorist threat.

I wonder what would happen if just the internet in the USA was shut down for a month or so?

What would happen?

Ok Frank, I put it on one of my folding rigs under www.OCForums.com team as sno.lcn.

i dl'ed the client just to screw around with it...It's using between 10-15% of my cpu, and I don't think i'm going to keep using it...But it is semi-entertaining.

I agree with warriorII. What happens if this information falls in the wrong hands? More control for the government? I think not.

OK Frank, Now you (www.ocforums.com) are off of the 700's and starin at hitting the 100's real fast.
Hey, this seems like it could be used for racin' real well. :D too bad I cant get this
stuff running on my headless rigs for fun..

Who is jheizer on netdimes? Maybe I can't catch up with ghetto and frank(maybe I can) but I'm definately about to pass jheizer. The way I see it, it may take away a few cpu cycles from folding, but that means I just need to borg more rigs so F_M still rises to the top!

I tried it too, but I saw about a 55% CPU usage on my single processor Macs (via Activity Monitor) and 70MB of RAM utilized. On a dual processor Mac it only registered at 6.5% CPU usage with 45MB of RAM. That is quite a big hit on single processor machines. Total threads used were listed as 19. What kind of usage you looking at on your Windows machines THF? Any difference between single processors and say X2s or dual cores?

OK! Further investigation proved that having the agent set to the graph tab is the culprit. Who needs pretty graphics anyway?! We all use the CLI client for folding, right?! Why should this be any different? If you set the agent to the messages tab and hide it, the max CPU usage goes down to between .80% and 1.6% on single and dual processor boxes. Thought you might like to know. Fold and dime on! :)

I just verified it. Actually another member of a certain team of "dimers" sneaking up on y'all pointed out the anomaly. I don't think it is quite as pronounced for the Win agent as it is for the Mac agent. Just wanted to let you know so that it would not interfere with your folding AND level the playing field for when we go "diming" by ya. ;)
