I have a 16 port switch at the office that is being used up. I took 1 port out and added a wireless router on that port but it wont let me access the network of the 16 port computers. Is there a way?

I don't think there are any wireless switches. I tried turning off DHCP on my router thinking it will make it into a switch but that just disabled all the computer on the router.

Any help?

can you ping any of the computers on the 16 port?

if not, do you need a cross over cable, or use a uplink port on the switch?

is the wireless router on the same range of IP addresses?

can you put the router into bridging mode?

is the 16 port a managed switch?, if so can you see the port you have plugged the router into as being active?

a few things to be looking at :)

You were on the right track. A wireless access point added to a switch will allow multiple wireless connections to that network through the access point. By turning off the DHCP function of the router you essentially make it an access point. Next you need to make sure it is configured to be in the same subnet as the rest of the computers so that the PCs connecting through it will be able to get an IP address from your DHCP server.

So the next steps would be to find out what the IP address range being assigned by your DHCP server is, the subnet mask and default gateway used by your network. You can then pick an IP address that isn't being used by anything, and isn't in the DHCP scope, and assign that to the access point along with the proper subnet mask and default gateway. Then hosts that connect wirelessly should be able to get an IP address from your DHCP server and be full members of your network.

Are you connecting the router to the switch via the WAN port? Sounds to me like that is how you are connecting it. Turn off DHCP, and connect it via a crossover cable from one of the 4 ports on the router to the switch. That should make it work for you.
