VERY weird windows problem

Pretty weird problem, fairly fresh XP installation -

It starts up gets to the welcome screen, then FREEZES.. it would freeze forever, unless i press control alt delete, then it goes right into the desktop seemingly with no other problems.. i wouldnt care about this , but I intend to trade/sell this laptop and don't want to pass a machine with any problems.

I would think a program loading on start up is crashing the sys. Does it occur when you boot into 'safe mode?' If not, use the msconfig and do selective start up until you find the culprit. The event viewer might provide some insight if it a sys malfunction.
