View Full Version : Not real happy with the new folding software.......

Sorry guys if this has already been posted. I don't get to come to this forum often but I did a quick scan to see if I could find a related topic to no avail.
This new folding program is causing me problems. Screen saver locks up, monitor goes to sleep mode and won't wake w/o a cold boot, and conflicts with DAoC (Dark Ages of Camelot).
I have narrowed it down to folding as I can turn folding off, and I have no further problems.
I'm VERY sure there's a bit of corruption in my OS (2k server) however I'm too lazy to do a format and reinstall.
Anyone having similar problems?
Oh and also.......this client is definitely slower crunching WU's. A Villain protein was taking about an hour less time in the old client than it does in this one. (maybe due to my corruption?)
If I run the "Plain Jane" version (which I intend to try soon) would it be any faster or less likely to cause me these problems?
Thanks for the input in advance..........

There are some bugs one of which is the screensaver in win2k. Just turn it off. Secondly villin's are worth 2 points and take longer than on ver. 1. Welcome to the team shadow. The text ver. is about the same speed. I am using the graphical client with the screensaver turned off and only look at the graphic to see what protein I am working on. Hope this helps. Fold on!!!

I had the same problems with the screensaver. I just went into properties and set the screensaver to none and I haven't had a problem since.
I think the purpose of releasing the new version of the software was so that they could do bigger work units. I had asumed that this is why they took longer but I don't really know.
The best advice has already been mentioned. That is- no screensaver. They don't seem to be able to make a screensaver that works right. And.. there was some problem w/displays on some pc's, but not all. They blamed it on Voodoo cards and OpenGL drivers. Some people got everything to work with new drivers others haven't been so lucky.
The new client may take longer. Like Hugo 59 said they came out with a new way to break down the folding process to allow considerably more work to be done with each wu. It will show up on their end in the form of faster end results but on our end it will look slower.
I was chatting w/ Shadow on this....I've got a P/// 600@927, 512MB PC133 CAS3, and it takes like 8 hours to get thru a "villin"...
That seems really long....is it? How long is it taking you to get thru a 1000 Frame "villin", those of you with similar setups?

ok I've played with it a bit and have YET to find the feature to turn off the screen saver. Even went into the config file.
any suggestions?

I noticed the same size protein a villin with 500000 steps now take my 2 times as long on my system here see sig. It was 12 seconds a frame now its 29 seconds.
Shadow you turn off the screensaver under display properties in windows it is not in the program.
Hope this helps.

Interesting... that's exactly what I'm getting. These 1000 frame villins were folding on my 1.0@1.4 in about 14 seconds and now they're at 29 seconds according to FoldMonitor. Are they worth 2 points now?
Another interesting item is that the three clients on my 850@952 are folding 100 frame villins and they are taking twice as long as well.
I have no idea why but everything seems to be taking much longer. Our stats are way down as well as everyone elses. Also reading the email group messages it looks like others are noticing that it takes longer to do a wu now.

That's what it seems like from here too and the points are about half what they were. I haven't been measuring but noticed that the proteins are taking much longer than before.

Looking at the stats pages it looks like everyones starts are about half. Looks like they slowed things down. I thought I would hit 500 Points this weekend guess not. :)

I noticed my system slowdown lastnight. Thought there was something wrong with my computer but I checked F@H page last night and found there is a new project which coincides with my slowdown. Project 105 takes about twice as long.

I run the "No-Nonsense" console and recommend others do so as well. For those of us that ran the console in 1.34, it's pretty much the same. Haven't had any problems as of yet, between my 2 personal boxes and the 4 Celerons in my lab, and my friend Kristin's box.

Shadow,
I've had problems with two versions of the new software since I first installed it. Can't run the "no-nonsense" version at all. I didn't even try the screensaver version. I'm now running the "graphical client" version, but am unable to know what is being folded. If I check the display for the "graphical client" version all I see is garbled text and then it crashes. So it is folding in the background, don't know what it is folding, how long it takes or what my total WU's are unless I check the stats. I am using Win2k pro, just reinstalled recently, with a Radeon LE agp card. Hopefully they will release a version that works.
You can check by opening the fahlog.txt. it will show you what protein and how many steps done. I think they changed something the villin's are taking twice as long maybe this is the way it is suppose to be considering that they are worth 2 points. It was fun while it lasted:D
Edit: there are some graphics boards that are not compatible. which could be your problem with the graphical display.

Thanks kendan. I was finally able to open fahlog.txt and check on what it's working on. I had tried to open it before but I kept getting "unable to open file, blah, blah blah". I can understand about there being a problem with one of the most popular graphics boards, but I am confused as to why the "no-nonsense" version refuses to work at all.

My Laptop is an 850 PIII and it does a villin in seven hours without problems, for a PIII overclocked at 927MHz that seems strange that mine is faster than yours maybe villins are different, maybe some are bigger and some are smaller any ideas??

I have a PIII700E@933 same memory config as yours. It is taking me about 9hrs to do a 1000 villin. My P41.7 gets only 100 villins and takes about 6.8 hrs, and my Ath1.4 w/sdram takes 7.5hrs for 100 villins. It appears as their server is picking up on the speed of the system accessing it and assigns the 100 villins to the faster systems. I never get 100villins on my 933.

Where do you get "Foldmonitor" is it a seperate download or is it in the 2.0 package?
FoldMonitor (http://users.neosmart.com/hruzaden/folding/index.html) can be found here. Read all the instructions because if you don't already have it, you have to download PERL too.

I'm running the text console too, but I'm not happy with it. It's fine on the boxes that are just for folding, but on my main rig it seems that if I have to shut it down, even using CTRL-C, I lose my work-in-progress. But the graphical client doesn't like my geforce2 MX 400 card and causes lockups. It's fine as long as I'm not trying to get an other work done.

It could be that the core65 on your PIII@933 is the older core. The newer core should be doing 100 frame proteins. The proteins themselves are the same but the way they are handled by the client are different.

Thanks for the kind words... :)
Actually, she'll do 954, but I rolled it back a touch to make 100% sure of stability for Folding. I never had stability problems at 954...I plan on easing it back up to that setting.
It just seemed incredibly slower compared to the XP. I know the MHz difference if significant between the two, and the XP is running DDR PC2100, but i thought the P/// would still crank 'em out a bit faster than it's doing.
When I had my P/// 700E in there, I had it set to 933 too. I thought I'd try the 600E instead, as the FSB running higher might have made a difference. Doesn't seem to have helped at all...:(
I've got an eye on a 1.4 T-Bird/mobo combo (using the same board I've got the XP on)... If it's still available in a couple of weeks, I'll be able to pick up the pace a bit more.... ;)
Thanks for the reply, JetMech...at least now I know that its running about how fast it "should" be.
